To The Supreme Commander of our Allied Forces, April 12, 2999. The enemy encampment lies approximately 140 kilometers north east of Sacramento, along the north fork of the American River. Their strength is about 12,000 soldiers. I have counted 260 cannon in their wagon train. Most look to be 10 pounders with some 20 pounders. Their cavalry number approximately 1500, and they are armed with sabers and pistols. The infantry are armed with rifled muskets, pikes, and long bows. The numerous cooking fires and heavily loaded wagons indicate they are well supplied. Both their draft and cavalry horses look well fed. We encountered an enemy patrol near the hill overlooking their encampment and I am lucky to have escaped with my life. Thank you for lending me your fastest horse. I am sending this message on what appears to be the evening of their march on the city, and hope it reaches you in time to set up an ambush at the bridge. Your humble servant, Etc. etc.
