2010 World Championship

By winning the San Diego Regional FRC, BCR qualified for the FIRST Championship, April 15-17, 2010 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. We took 13 students, six mentors, and four parents to compete in the Georgia Dome. The competition NASA Webcast was viewed by many parents, volunteers, and supporters.

FRC Championship Winners!

FIRST Press Release (PDF). Once again, for the seventh year in a row, Northrop Grumman Corporation has sponsored our team at the World Championship. Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (NGAS) has been our primary corporate sponsor since the team 294's formation in 1998. Max Kimura made a Youtube video clip about our team as part of a sendoff message for Japanese astronaut Naoko Yamazaki. She was in orbit at the International Space Station while the Championship was underway.

(mentor, kneeling); Robbie Gleichman; Nighelles David; Dave Ansari (mentor, kneeling, holding banner);
Fintan O’Grady; Matt Steiger; Ryan Sharp (kneeling, team captain); Alex Davis (kneeling); Peter Johnson
(mentor); Ken Sterk (mentor); Cindy Sharp (crouching, parent mentor); Rick Sharp (parent mentor); and
Rick Wagner (mentor). The drive team consisted of Ryan Sharp (driver); Anton Schuetze-Coburn (co-driver,
not shown); Robbie Gleichman (human player and programmer); and Andrew Keisic (adult coach). Hidden
completely behind Forrest Kim is mentor and team coordinator Andrea Wagner.

Top seeded and undefeated in the Newton Division, BCR chose second seeded team 67 (HOT (Heroes of Tomorrow)) from Michigan and team 177 (Bobcat Robotics) from Connecticut as our alliance partners for the Newton elimination matches, winning a tough elimination contest for the gold medal and trophy for the Newton Division. We then took our alliance on to victory on the Einstein Field for the World Championship.

We wish to thank NGAS (Executive Sponsor John Daegele), our mentors, volunteers, parents, and other sponsors, without whom our victory in Atlanta would not have been possible.

Wednesday after checking in at the competition venue, we posed with the NASA crewed moon rover
on display. Rob Ambrose, a mentor with the Robonauts from Houston, Texas, is part of that
project.

The BCR drive team showed flexibility in constantly moving their positions of the robot on the field
and of the drive team at the driver stations. This kept the opposition guessing.

On the Einstein field we first played against the Galileo winners in the semi-finals. Here is video of the tie-breaker match.

Then we faced the Archimedes winners for the finals. Here is video of match one and video of match two.

After the Championship win, the team took the robot to the CNN Center for a live televised interview with their alliance partners.
