October Chess Games

Some of the more interesting or instructive games I played against my computer this month. I did not put book openings into the computer program. A human player with access to a library would be cheating, and so it is with computers. The Homeostatic Chess Player computes its own opening moves. There is a small random "fuzz" factor in the position value computation so it will play different openings, even with the same look-ahead depth.

Irregular Opening

Computer is black.

	White	Black
1.	c4	d5 Computers tend to do better in open, more tactical, openings.
2.	cxd5	Qxd5
3.	Nc3	Qd6 Black has lost a tempo, but his queen has more move options.
4.	Nf3	Nf6
5.	Qc2	Bd7 White keeps black's bishop from reaching f5.
6.	a3	a6 White and black both make prophylactic moves.
7.	d4	Nc6
8.	e3	g6 Black prepares to fiancetto his king's bishop.
9.	Bd3	Bg7 White still prevents black's bishop from reaching f5.
10.	O-O	O-O
11.	b4	Na7
12.	Bb2	Ra8b8 The opening phase of the game is over and the middle game begins.
13.	Ra1b1	h5
14.	Ne5	Be6 A win in chess cannot be forced. One must wait for the opponent to make a mistake.
15.	Nc4	Qd7
16.	Ne2	Bf5
17.	e4	Be6 White's center pawns begin to show their strength.
18.	h3 Bxc4 Black's bishop sacrifice Bxh3 would fail because he would be unable to bring new pieces to bear.
