May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii

We drove to Kapiolani Park Sunday Morning, May 1st to join in the festivities.

The Royal Hawaiian Band was playing. Here, a singer (in a yellow mumu) sings "May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii."

Leis and other crafts are for sale in the park.

Leis in the judged contest are on the wall behind me.

On the way back to the car Andrea took this great picture of Diamond Head.

We stopped by the Zoo Fence to show Paul Forney my boogie board.

Paul had painted the boogie board into the painting he did for Andrea and me, but he had only seen it in
photographs.

He told me he would like to see the boggie board. Here are some of his paintings for sale.

I took a picture of him holding it.

Paul admired the board I made 30 years ago.

Later that morning we went to Nii Nursery way up in Hawaii Kai.

I picked out a monstera to plant in the back by my "office."

Home Projects

Andrea and I are spending time working in the garden and "office."

In my "office" by the stream.

On May 6th I finally got around to hanging up our painting by Paul Forney. Photo by Lenore.

I found this boulder buried behind the lichee tree, so I dug it up and washed it off. May 10, 2011.

We got a US flag in preparation for Memorial Day later this month. The small flag is for Da Office. May 11, 2011.

We found used light diffusers at Reuse Hawaii and got two at 50 cents each. May 12, 2011.

FRC Team 3008

On Tuesday the 3rd we went to a team meeting at Kalani High School.

The students gather around the table for the meeting.

Grant and Eric lead a session on summer plans for a Robotics Academy and outreach activities.

Bonsai on Cinco de Mayo

We drove out to the Peerson's house on the North Shore for the twice monthly bonsai get-together.

Steve and Chuck at work on their bonsai.

Jan has a nice elm.

Steve is wiring a great triple trunk prostrata juniper.

Jim Myers works on his juniper.

I'm potting the banyan I bought at last Saturday's bonsai show and plant sale in Pearl Ridge.

Our hosts, Jim and Dawn, have some great bonsai.

It looks pretty good in a cement training pot.

Jan, Steve, and Chuck continue working.

Jim has some great trees in his bonsai collection.

Jim and Dawn served enchiladas in honor of Cinco De Mayo.

Did you know some Americans fought alongside the Mexicans to expel the French on the fifth of May, 1862?

In the evening before dinner, I installed the painted shelf in my office.

First Friday in Chinatown

Andrea and I attended "First Friday" again in the art district in Chinatown. Paul and Faye joined us later at a gallery and we went to The Dragon Upstairs to listen to jazz.

We had dinner at Epic restaurant. Recommended. Good food and reasonable prices.

Epic has a nice decor too.

The gallery at Mark's Garage had a young woman singing Hawaiian songs.

I like these sketches of Ku from the tikis at the Bishop Museum.

We saw an upstairs gallery. Paul and Faye enjoy the paintings.

There was also a yoga studio with this small shrine.

The jazz band at the Dragon Upstairs featured a saxaphone player, drummer, basist, and pianist.
I made a short (under four minutes) Windows movie format (wmv) video of one of their numbers.

Andrea likes the masks on the wall and took this photo.

Mothers' Day

Sunday, May 8th is Mothers' Day. I had made a reservation for breakfast at Longhi's Restaruant in the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Table number five, of course, with a great view of Ala Moana Park and the ocean beyond.

Andrea took this photo on her cell phone and shared it on Facebook.

Golden Duck

Thursday, May 12th we stopped for gas.

We noticed the sign for the Golden Duck Restaurant and had to get a picture for Becky.

Sans Soucci Beach

Monday, May 9th we went to the beach.

I found this zebra morray eel's partially eaten body washed up on the shore and Andrea took a picture.

Sunday the 15th at the beach.

Tuesday the 17th is the full moon and high tide while we were on the beach.

Bluewater Grill

Wednesday, May 18th we took Lenore and her friend Carol to Bluewater Grill for dinner and music.

Lenore, Andrea, and Carol.

One of the mallard ducks came up to get some bread crumbs.

Waimea Valley

Thursday, May 19th we went to bonsai group at Jim Peerson's house and then on to Waimea Valley for a look around and lunch.

Community Theater

Sunday, May 23rd we took Lenore to Windward Community College to see the production of Bugsy Malone with the Youngs. We went to dinner at Pah Kay's afterward.

The next day I took another photo of Paul Forney's painting. Click the image for the high resolution version.

Andrea's Trip to California

Wednesday, May 25th Andrea boarded Hawaiian Airlines for a five-day trip to Redondo Beach, California, to take care of stored furniture. Becky and Tom joined her to get Becky's furniture moved to New York and move the remaining stuff into a smaller storage unit to save money.

Andrea sadly waves aloha at Hawaiian Airlines check-in.

The motorized contraption called a jet airliner.

I started my bench project later that day. The sawhorses have seahorses.

The movers arrived on time the next day and used their portable machine shop to construct a custom
crate for the roan antelope head.

Then they got all of Becky's things packed up and shipped out.

Andrea drove by our old house across Hawthorne Blvd. and took this photo. Weeds are growing, lawn needs
mowing, and there's a piece of junk by the garage. But with the new satellite dish they won't lack for
entertainment to keep them occupied. Yes, I'm a social critic, just like everyone else.

Later Andrea took this picture of Tom and Becky at sunset.

Meanwhile, back at Sans Souci, beach hazards in paradise. Naturally I went swimmking anyway.

Progress on the love bench.

Friday night, Tom and Becky at Old Tony's on the Redondo Beach Pier.

In Kaimuki at the Town restaurant on Waialae Avenue. Carol had the risotto and
Lenore and I had the ono.

Saturday: continued working on the love bench.

Sunday the 29th: Andrea went to the Fiesta de los Artes in Hermosa Beach.

Frustrated rapturists at the Fiesta?

I went to see the Memorial Day service at the Natatorium but they got started later than I had planned for.

Flo, Lynne, Gloria, Carol, Lenore, and Estelle have dinner at Kit 'n Kitchen on University Avenue
after seeing Altar Boys at Diamond Head Theater Sunday evening.

The bench has five logs. May 30, 2011.

Andrea stopped to see Bob and Pat Hosken on Monday, the 30th. They look great! Lots of love.

Lenore had a one-on-one class on iMac basics with Hubert at the Kahala Mall Apple store.

Finished shaping the top of the bench. Next the bottom gets finish shaped and then the legs go on.

Checked Andrea's flight status at the Hawaiian Airlines site at 6:45 PM.

Andrea is glad to be home! Baggage claim C3 at HNL.

Andrea and Phyllis on Tuesday.

Andrea, Phullis, and Karl at their home. Karl gave us some plants for the yard.

Work on the love bench continues.
