Kamaʻaina Sunday at ʻIolani Palace

Andrea volunteered again at Kamaʻaina Sunday at ʻIolani Palace on November ninth. We got 1.93 inch of rain overnight but it was not raining there when she arrived. I stayed home and rinsed off the Toyota on the street that had sat overnight under the bauhinia tree.

Today I began to work on my willow leaf ficus (ficus nerifolia). They make great bonsai.

After over two inches of rain the stream behind our house is running for the first time in many months.

Monday I potted my willow leaf ficus (ficus nerifolia) into a plastic training pot, the chokan (formal upright) style.

On Sunday, November 23rd, I attended the monthly meeting of the Rainbow Bonsai Club while Andrea participated in the Kaʻiwi Coast run-walk. The meeting had been moved from its regular second Sunday to accomodate Jason Chan from California who was visiting the islands. The meeting and demonstration were held in the Ahuimanu Homeowners Association clubhouse in Kaneohe.

Saturday afternoon I photographed the bonsai escambron I planned to take to the meeting.

Jason chose this Monterey Cypress, owned by Jim Meyer, to work on.

They went to breakfast at the Beastside Kitchen in Hawaiʻi Kai afterward.

We invited all HBA members and we had a good turnout. Jason is a former officer of the Golden State Bonsai Federation (California) and
is proprietor of Eastern Leaf bonsai nursery in Chino, California.

Jason decided to make a bunjin (literati style) out of the tree.

He discussed the rationale for finding the front.

Discussing branch placement.

People brought pot luck items for lunch after the demo.
