August 2023 Journal Photos

August first fell on a Tuesday this year.

Pot Painting

Andrea had bought a dozen small terra cotta pots at the HBA pot sale two months ago and I had decided to paint them, continued from July.

We walked down to the stream and Andrea took photographs.

In the afternoon on Tuesday, Andrea weeded the back lawn while I painted pots.

I carefully signed each one "RJW" on its bottom. Photo by Andrea.

I saw a Web ad for my book on eBay on Thursday the third and clicked on it.

KISCA Hui Zoom Meeting

Andrea and I attended the periodic hui (Kahala’s Initiative for Sustainability, Culture & the Arts) meeting, Friday, August 4.

Screen capture.

My video showing the scale model of the spaceliner that I built in January of 2022 before I started writing Brent and Edward Go to Mars.

Bonsai Mountain Apple

Kevin at the Manoa Heritage Center gave me a mountain apple cutting a couple of years ago. I've been letting it grow, and today, Monday, August 7, I transplanted it into a concrete growing pot.

The ohia 'ai (mountain apple) in its plastic pot that Kevin planted the cutting in two years ago.

After some light pruning.

After repotting at a better angle. The dead branches were broken off. The stones around the base are to temporarily prop the tree against the wind.

Tuesday morning Andrea photographed the monroidendron flowers. It's an endangered species tree from Kauai, from seed.

After the tragic fires on Maui, Andrea found her old photos of our trip there in 2011:

Seventy-fourth Birthday

Recovering from covid-19, Andrea and I are celebrating my birthday in seclusion in the house.

Joleen came over Thursday morning and gave me a lei of imported liquor from Washington, from which she had returned last Friday.

I listened to my psychedelic playlist during and after breakfast on my birthday.

Andrea took this video of me opening my musical birthday card.

I got a shirt to mow the lawn in!

A really cool solar fish lantern.

A picture book of important cars.

An interesting fact book.

I put the fish lamp on the rain gage diversionary bird perch.

Coincidentally, my ten proof copies of Brent and Edward Go to Mars arrived in the afternoon.

I checked them out carefully and authorized publication. It should be on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, etc., in about two weeks.

After a wonderful dinner of lamb shank stew with rice and green beans, Andrea brought me a special birthday dessert of homemade
chocolate fudge brownie with homemade vanilla bean ice cream. Delicious!

After it got dark, sure enough the birthday solar fish lamp was lit.

Saturday morning I photographed all four of my published books. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

I got this cute pair of gnomes playing a board game from my son Robert on Sunday the 12th.

Isolating with Covid19

After three weeks, Andrea tested negative twice two days apart, but I'm still testing slightly positive. August 13 is the 54th anniversary of my entering the USAF back in 1969.

Sunday the 13th I photographed the display items above the television: a pōhaku, wa'a kaulua, ki'i, hale, and kī.
The dai on the right is a gift from Matt Glei.

I photographed the birthday gnomes close up on Monday morning.

On Tuesday the 15th we both tested negative, Andrea for the third time in four days. I will test again on Thursday and if it's negative I can stop isolating.

On Wednesday Andrea joined the citizens patrol walk at 7:00 AM for the first time in weeks.

Planting Sandalwood Seeds

Wednesday afternoon (16th) I planted 19 sandalwood ('iliahi) seeds and Andrea took some photos.

Sanding off the pointy end to expose the interior.

Like that, just until the lighter colored material is exposed.

Putting half inch cinders into a five inch pot.

Well draining soil is added and then the seeds are placed.

Like that. Ninteen, one for each of the indicted Georgia conspirators.

The seeds were covered with more soil and put on the shelf for watering.

Thursday morning, the 17th, I tested negative for the second time in two days. I can quit isolating now!

Cascade Kiawe Bonsai

I made over my cascade kiawe bonsai on Friday the 18th and on Saturday I photographed it.

1967 R. Crumb cartoon downloaded from Facebook. Summer of love. I went to Sanfrancisco then and spent the night a couple of times.

Dinner with Friends

Saturday evening Joleen, Matt, and Diane came over for dinner of roast chicken.

Joleen showed us an app that converts your photo into a Barbie doll.

Joleen with hers.

Andrea dipping a cracker.

Matt missed the button for male so we all got a laugh at his Barbie.

Examining the doll result.

Sunday, the 20th, I tried sending a photo to bairbie.me and got this result.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

MHC tour at 10:00 AM on Wednesday the 23rd.

I received this present of birthday chocolates from Becky and Eric on Monday afternoon, the 21st.

Tuesday morning, the 22nd, we walked down to the Hind Drive bridge before breakfast and Andrea took photos.

Wednesday morning I photographed our painting of a drummer by Charlot. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

On the MHC tour at the front of the house, Lisa, Colleen, and Sue take photographs.

Andrea photographed this pair of maiapilo blossoms on our walk before breakfast on Thursday, the 24th.

Sunset Seminar

Andrea and I attended the Sunset Seminar at the Kahala Hotel on Thursday night, August 24. The topic was Sustaining the Headwaters: A Collaborative Approach to Managing Watersheds Across Landowner Boundaries.

Pupu and a juice drink were served.

Andrea took some photos. We sat with new friends Retno and David.

Our friend JC (John Carl) gave the talk.

Friday morning we saw a faint rainbow on our walk before breakfast. It rainded several times overnight.

I lined up the bonsai I created during covid isolation: plumeria, mock orange, plumeria, a'ali'i, and Brazilian pepper.

Bonsai Workshop at the Manoa Heritage Center

Andrea and I gave a two hour workshop at the request of the Manoa Heritage Center on Saturday, August 26, at 10:00 AM. All photos by Andrea.

I asked participants to introduce themselves at the beginning.

I talked about bonsai I had brought.

The people asked lots of questions.

In the second hour I demonstrated on a juniper.

The trained juniper goes into a bonsai pot.

Putting sand on top of the bonsai soil.

Then the participants went to work on their own trees supplied as part of the workshop. I helped Casey with his.

The final group photo. Lots of good work there. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

On Sunday, the following day, I photographed my demonstration tree. Click the image to see the full resolution version.
