Lunar Phases and Tides

We are staying aware of the sky. Jupiter is our evening star right now. The moon is half full.

I downloaded this lunar tide calendar that was posted by the Thirty Meter Telescope Facebook page.

Mel Carrillo created a show flyer for the annual December bonsai show.

Morning Walks in Wailupe Valley

Andrea and I took some photos on our daily morning walks.

Sunday

We walked the steep street of Ailuna on Sunday, November 6.

We continued over by the water facility with its million gallon tank.

See? The horizon is only slightly tilted today.

Monday

This dramatic photo was taken by Andrea on Monday morning, November 7.

Tuesday

We walked to the makai end of Lawelawe Street where Diamond Head is just barely visible.

Looking out over lower Aina Haina. The horizon is perfectly level.

Walking home up Hind Iuka we noticed the high clouds turning pink.

Team Magma Robotics Training at Kalani High School

I went to Kalani High School and lectured on software development on Wednesday evening, November 9.

Before the lecture. A team meeting was in progress when I arrived.

While waiting, I photographed Mr. Silver's office space at the back of the classroom. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

Volunteer Lunch at Manoa Heritage Center

The annual Manoa Heritage Center volunteer mahalo lunch was held on Thursday, November 10. Andrea and I attended and Andrea helped provide entertainment with Kilohana's hula halau.

We made arica palm husk flower baskets when we arrived at 11:00 AM. Volunteer Earle talked with us for a while.

We had a lunch of sandwiches and corn chowder. That's my finished flower basket on the table.

Veterans Day Weekend

November 11 fell on Friday this year. I flew the flag, of course, but I didn't get a photo of it.

I scanned this New Yorker cartoon from their October 31 issue on Saturday morning, November 12.

Pot Luck Party at Adele's House

Adele had her annual back yard party for neighbors on Saturday evening, November 12.

It rained all morning so Adele had a canopy set up.

Lots of people came and brought food and wine.

Our docent was quite knowledgeable. The two guys in wheelchairs were part of Sato's and Ochikubo's Metcalf Studio back in the 1950s.

Sendoff Dinner for Joleen

Andrea and I invited Joleen over for lamb dinner on Tuesday, November 15. She brought na pupu and wine.

A pikake lei for Joleen.

We came inside to eat dinner.

Andrea made apple crisp with ice cream and whipped cream which we ate while watching an episode of Father Brown, the British mystery series.

On Wednesday Andrea and I attended a Zoom brainstormins session for reforestation of the ko'olau.

Thursday Andrea and I got our hair cut and upon our return I photographed the bonsai hibiscus after defoliation and repotting with a new front.

Here's an interesting puzzle: white wins by force. Solution on youtube.

Thanksgiving Week

Thanksgiving falls on the 24th this year.

Sunday

Andrea and I went for our daily walk before breakfast on the 20th.

We went up to Wailupe Elementary School.

View of the horizon.

This morning in an email exchange with Becky, she sent this photo of Eric taken last Friday. No snow in Connecticut so far.

After lunch we wrapped Ku in white cloth for Makahiki. Lono remains free.

Monday

Andrea and I went to Liliha for the radiation treatment setup scan in the morning.

On the way back from Liliha we stopped at Kahala Mall to buy Christmas cards and groceries. Photo by Andrea. Click the image to see the

Andrea went to afternoon Hula and saw the elves at work at Manoa Heritage Center.

Emma and Napoleon were sitting in our TV watching chairs.

Tuesday

Andrea and I went to Hui Ku Maoli Ola nursery in Haiku above Kaneohe to buy an alahe'e for a tabletop Christmas Tree.

At the nursery. We got a nice alahe'e and two palapalai ferns. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

Wednesday

Andrea and I went to the Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center to meet Chris Cramer to pick up an auction item Andrea had successfully bid on in an online fundraising auction. We went home and put air in her right front tire using my mini-compressor before she drove to Manoa Valley for a hula session with Kilohana's halau.

Andrea parked our Leaf on a residential street and we walked along Kalanianaole Highway where we could see the fishpond.

Thursday

On Thanksgiving morning I went to the Calvary Church to help set up a tent for the Angel Network's Thanksgiving feeding event. I parked on Papai Street and walked across Kalanianaole Highway. I arrived before the 9:30 AM time I was told, but work had begun earlier. Afterward I went to Foodland to buy milk, vodka, bourbon, and ice for our own celebration at home.

As I approached on East Hind Drive I could see that setup work had already started.

I took another photo while I waited for the walk signal at the traffic light.

I was able to lend a hand with the final assembly operations and tying down.

I took a photo of the food pantry before I left.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Photo by Andrea.

Andrea cooked a Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat.

Friday

Andrea went to give tours at the Mission Houses. I brought in the alahe'e for our table-top Christmas tree.

I put the tree in a place where it will get afternoon sun.

Saturday

I mowed the lawn the morning of November 26. Andrea stayed home and began decorating for Christmas. In the evening I finished reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. I noticed I had irritated sinuses and the beginning of a raspy voice and dry cough.

Sunday

In the middle of the night, early Sunday morning, November 27, I noticed my irritated sinuses and cough were slightly worse, so I took my temperature, and it was normal. I drank some water and went back to bed. In the morning, there was no improvement, but we went for a morning walk and had breakfast. After breakfast I was a bit better, but I took my temperature again, still normal. Then I took a covid test. Negative. That was good to find out. I was getting better so I did my floor and weight lifting exercises.

Sunday afternoon Andrea and I went to see The Game's Afoot or Holmes for the Holidays, a farce about William Gillette at Manoa Valley Theatre.

Waiting to go in to see the play, I photographed Andrea with a stage hand.

The stage set is the inside of Gillette's castle in Connecticut.

Monday

My hoarse voice had returned in the morning so I took my temperature again, still normal.

After three weeks, Sandra at Dorrance replied to my notification of the blurry photos in the latest PDF of the book. She did not seem to understand the problem so I created two JPEGs showing before and after versions of one image. They are all like that. She also sent the cover PDFs again. The Warren blurb was in but without attribution, and the Keith blurb was not. Still no spine image.

Andrea went to Ben Franklin Crafts and bought some blue cord to begin her macramé Christmas tree.

A photo from an earlier version of the book draft on the left. The photo from the latest draft. Unacceptabley blurred.

Wednesday

On Tuesday I stayed home an incorporated Becky's comments into my novel while Andrea went to the Nissan dealer to get new tires for her Leaf.

On Wednesday, I stayed home and did my morning workout. Andrea went to her hula class in Manoa.

The class had lunch and cake after hula in celebration of a member's birthday. Photo posted by Kilohana on Facebook.
