May 2022 Journal Photos
May flowers brought by April showers.
May Day
May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii.
I picked 70 plumeria flowers in the morning and Andrea made a lei to take to Mom in the afternoon.
Imaging at Queens
Andrea drove me to Queens on Monday morning, April 2, for a scheduled imaging appointment.
Andrea dropped me off ont he street and I walked to the front entrance of POB III. Later I got results from
MyChart that showed no evidence of disease.
Sans Souci Beach
Andrea's sister Jan arrived on Wednesday, April 4. I took her to the beach for a swim on Friday, April 6, while Andrea went to conduct tours
for the Mission Houses Museum downtown.
After swimming I went to do pullups and took this photograph of the Waikiki surf.
I saw this model and photographic crew session at the Natatorium.
On Saturday the 7th this Pacific parotlet came to me and Andrea took it to the Humane Society for adoption.
Rainbow Bonsai Club
The club monthly meeting, the second Sunday, fell on Mother's Day, May 8. I fixed fried eggs with chorizo, toast, papaya, and blueberries
for Andrea and Jan. Then Andrea and I drove to the bonsai club meeting in Kailua while Jan went for a swim at Sans Souci Beach. In the
afternoon we all went to visit Lenore in the care home.
After the business meeting we had show and tell. Here, John talks about the two trees he brought while Mel livestreamed it.

Mel talked about his display.
Sans Souci Beach
Tuesday morning, May 10, Andrea and I went to the beach for a swim.
At the arbor that I use for my pull-up bars I saw these tourist girls taking photos by the banyan tree.
There was a monk seal sleeping by the Natatorium wall.
We went for a swim again on Thursday, May 12, and I took this photo of the entry to the War Memorial (Natatorium).
Thursday afternoon we attended the student paper awards ceremony at UH via Zoom. Herman Lim won the Johnson prize.
Applause at the end of the ceremony.
Friday the thirteenth we went for a swim in the morning. The missing picnic table under the mauka banyan tree has been replaced.
Saturday morning, May 14, I took this photo of my bonsai bench.
Tuesday the seventeenth we went for an early swim, arriving at about 08:30. I saw tourist after tourist climb the barrier to the
path behind the Aquarium. Parts are collapsing and scheduled for repair, one supposes, someday.
The hau tree is blooming. The reddish one on the left is yesterday's bloom that hasn't fallen yet. The one on the right is newly
opened this morning and is pale yellow. It will darken through the day. The hau tree is part of the hibiscus family and all
hibiscus flowers last only one day.
I walked across Kapiolani Park to photograph a banyan tree, one of several in the park. Photo by Andrea.
A beautiful banyan. The Diamond Head Tennis Courts are to the right.
The Lost Palaces of Hawaii
On Tuesday at noon, we watched the Zoom presentation, The Lost Palaces of Hawaii by Dr. Ralph Kam, presented by the Mission Houses
Mueseum. The blurb from the event:
Dr. Kam will discuss his new book of the same title, which is a comprehensive guide to the Hawaiian royal residences and the history
each holds. Kam used accounts by missionaries, ship captains, early visitors, and reports in English and Hawaiian-language media to
create this groundbreaking book, providing an extensive look into the now-lost residences of the kingdom’s elite.
There are literally dozens of homes, most ruined, used by royalty on the various islands.
Tuesday afternoon my son Robert called to tell me that my other son Tim just had a heart attack and was in the Midland Memorial Hospital.
He is 53 years old. Wednesday: he had surgery for stent replacement and is resting afterward.
Native Leaf Printing
On Wedneday, Andrea went to the Manoa Heritage Center for a class on native leaf printing while I stayed home and worked on my novel.
Pot luck lunch was served, and she stayed afterward to give a tour in the afternoon.

I ordered a copy of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for grandson Trystan Sunday from Amazon and it was delivered Monday morning.
Autobiography
Publishing my autobiography is complete with the publication of this
press release.
I took the PDF created by Page Publishing, copied the text, pasted it into word, added the book cover graphic, saved it as a PDF,
then opened it in PaintShop Pro, and saved it as a JPEG so I could post it on Facebook.
Lunch at Zippy's
Andrea and I drove to Hawaii Kai for lunch at Zippys on Wednesday, May 25. Our friend Keith Schultz was there having lunch too.
I asked Keith to take our picture with my phone.
Then I took one of Andrea and Keith.

Andrea ordered the saimin. I had the fried chicken plate, mini.
In the afternoon I transplanted som a'ali'i and ilima seedlings.
Ti Leaf Lei Making
Andrea and I drove to the Community Center in Waikiki on Thursday, the 26th, to join a group of volunteers in making ti leaf lei for
veterans' graves at Punchbowl for Memoria Day coming up this weekend.
We parked at the zoo and walked into Waikiki.
Some of the ti leaves were picked at our house last month and stored in a refrigerator.
Andrea and I made nine lei before we had to leave for our lunch reservation at Lulu's.
A FedEx pilot took our photo.

Democratic Convention
Andrea and I were delegates to the Democratic Convention on Saturday, May 28. It was a hybrid convention. Some attended in person at
the Alohilani Hotel in Waikiki, and some attended remotely.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Demonstration and Show
Rainbow Bonsai Club
held its first exhibit in two years on Sunday, May 29, at Koko Head Elementary School in Hawaii Kai.
Pre-demo
video.
Search youtube for Bonsai Mel Productions to see all of Mel's videos.
Andrea and I met Tina, Duane, and George at the school Saturday evening to do some early setup.
Andre and Tina rearranged the demonstration audience chairs.
Mel picked up Jason Chan in the morning in Waianae.
Shortly before opening to the public at 9:00 AM, there were people lined up waiting to get in.
A good turnout with lots of shopping for bonsai material, pots, tools, etc.
John won first place with his geometry tree.
Mel live streamed the demonstration by Jason (Bonsai Mel Productions). I got to hold the microphone. Photo by Andrea.
Jason worked away on the demonstration tree. It sold afterward at auction for $680. Photo by Andrea.
Mel moved in for a closeup for his
youtube channel. Photo by Andrea.
The buyer of the tree got some tips from Jason.
