Jigsaw Puzzle

Monday, November 1: Andrea started assembling the jigsaw puzzle I bought her at Thinker Things at Kahala Mall last month.

"Well begun is half done" as Mary Poppins once said.

Andrea went for a walk Monday morning and took this photo of a nearly cloudless sky in Wailupe Valley.

Wailupe Stream

On Tuesday the second, Andrea shared her Wailupe Stream photos taken this morning on her daily walk.

This is one of the photos linked above: stream access right of way on Lawelawe Street.

Diwali

Thursday, November 4th. This holiday season begins with Diwali.

"May the light of Diwali remind us that from darkness there is knowledge, wisdom, and truth. From division, unity. From despair, hope. To Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists celebrating in America and around the world — from the People’s House to yours, happy Diwali." — President Biden

Wailupe Stream

Friday, November 5th. I noticed some activity across the stream when I went out to the back yard to exercise this morning.

Sunday the seventh I photographed a pair of art objects in the front exterior of our house.

Flying the Thanksgiving flag. I'll replace it with Old Glory, of course, on Thursday, Veteran's Day.

Keawawa Wetlands in Hawaii Kai

Andrea went to volunteer work at the wetlands on Sunday, November 7, and after the work, at 5:00 PM, I joined them for an aloha oe, or bon voyage, party for Lolly, who is going back to New York after spending a year here.

As I approached the hale I took a picture of Elizabeth and helper setting up for the party.

Just about ready to begin the festivities.

Everybody gathered around.

Lolly bought a book for the group.

Lolly received lei from several volunteers.

Andrea and I sipped our champagne from the gold rimmed glasses.

Posing with the coconut trees.

Monday morning wall construction continued across the stream.

Monday afternoon I defoliated and wired one of my citrus bonsai.

Manoa Heritage Center

Andrea went to give school tours at the Manoa Heritage Center (MHC) on Tuesday morning, November 9, and I went to the Noelani Elementary School in Manoa to verify that there will be no Rainbow Bonsai Show this December. The school is not allowing use of its cafeteria due to covid. Then I went to MHC to meet Andrea and drop off a kou log for Keving to carve.

Kevin was maintaining the whaler kettle water feature when I arrived at the heiau.

Andrea was talking to a group of school children.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day, after the armistice agreement was signed on November 11, after the Great War, fell on Thursday this year.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Meeting

I went to the November meeting of the Rainbow Bonsai Club at acting President John's house on Sunday morning, November 14. This is the first meeting we've had since the summer due to covid restrictions. We held officer elections. Patrick is the new President, Scott is continuing as Treasurer, and I was elected Secretary.

I was asked if they will have fruit someday. The answer is probably. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

After the show-and-tell portion of the meeting we went up to John's front yard to look at his bonsai.

He has a nice water feature in his front yard, now kept dry.

Environmental and Cultural Hui Meeting

Andrea and I were invited to attend the subject meeting by Mark and Aloha. Discussion included controlling overfishing in Maunalua Bay and a September 2022 fundraiser event at the Kahala Hotel.

Screen capture from the meeting.

Limu Huki

Andrea and I went to our adopted plot at Paiko to pull invasive algae (limu) as part of our volunteering with Malama Manualua.

We arrived in the morning. Photo by Andrea at 08:36 AM. The horizon is amazingly level!

Together we got five bags. It's best to fill them no more than one third, as they need to be carried to the street an loaded on a truck later.

I developed a runny nose and one degree of fever on Thursday so I scheduled a covid-19 test at CVS (Long's Drugs) here in Aina Haina for Saturday Afternoon (the soonest available). I was told the results will be available in a day or two. On Monday morning, November 22, the result of the covid test came in negative via the CVS MyPage Web interface.

At CVS, I checked out their vitamin and mineral aisle. I found Airborne, the travel virus prophylaxis product, because I knew it had zinc in it: 8 mg. Then I bought a bottle of 50 mg zinc capsules, and took one when I got home, and one the next morning with breakfast. My regular daily multivitamin tablet has 15 mg. zinc.

Pacific Encounters

Andrea and I attended the second session in the OLLI Zoom series on Tuesday afternoon, November 23. This one focused on Fiji.

A screen capture from the Zoom session.

Wednesday Andrea went to CVS to get a printer cartridge and bought me this nice looking Santa Claus.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving fell this year on the 25th, the fourth and last Thursday of November.

Might be getting lots of "no comment" from teachers in anti-CRT states. Ask a question about slavery, get "no comment." I prefer public schools
where teachers aren't afraid to talk frankly in answer to controversial questions. The anti-CRT states are exactly those states that have banned
teaching of, or influenced by, critical race theory, e.g., Texas. Such laws are quite stupid, because history needs to be taught in public
schools. Accurate history at all levels is important because properly taught at younger grades means wrong history won't have to be unlearned
later. In the cartoon, the "answer" to the question will no doubt be in dispute, even among the descendants of the Wampanoags.
Fair use for educational purposes.

We drove to the care home in the morning and Andrea gave Mom some presents.

Iolani Palace

Andrea and I drove to Iolani Palace to pick up the Christmas ornaments she had ordered on Tuesday morning, November 30, stopping on the way at Longs CVS in Aina Haina for medicine for Mom, at City Mill in Kaimuki for potting soil and paint, and on the way home at Mom's care home to drop off the medicine, and at the bank in Aina Haina to get cash.

At the palace after stopping at the gift shop where we bought the fabric Christmas tree.

Andrea went to the ATM at the bank while I took this photo of Wailupe Valley.
