Malama Maunalua Limu Huki
Wednesday morning, December 1, Andrea and I went to our plot in Paiko to pull (huki) invasive algae (limu).
We arrived at 8:40 AM and Andrea signed in at the station and got six limu bags to start with.
Four bags of invasive limu on shore so far at 9:00 AM.

An interesting short
chess game
I played against the computer on December fourth and fifth.
A Visit to the Post Office
Sunday afternoon, December 5, Cedric couldn't make it for a weekly bonsai lesson. It's also grandson Trystan's 15th birthday.
Monday we had rain overnight and in the morning, but during an interlude at noontime, we went to the post office to mail
packages and cards.
Malia sent a photo of Trystan with ice cream.
We got 1.18 inch of rain overnight. Photo by Andrea. Stream is running gently.
The Aina Hain Post Office and Aina Haina Library are in proximity. I waited outside while Andrea waited in line inside.
By 4:40 PM the water was covering the entire streambed. Photo by Andrea.
Christmas Tree and Pacific Encounters
The weather dried out so Andrea and I went to Koolau Farms on Beretania to buy a Christmas tree and later we attended the final OLLI course,
Pacific Encounters, on Tuesday afternoon, December 7.
I removed the red plastic netting from the tree. Photo by Andrea.

A Visit to a Mosque in Kalihi
Andrea's Islam instructor invited the class to his mosque in Kalihi on Thursday afternoon, December 9.
After we arrived. Thirteen showed up altogether. Mati, the OLLI instructor and Mosque Imam, is on the left.
The visit lasted about an hour.
Afterward we went to the bar at the Kaimana (a beach hotel).
A view of the artwork on the lobby wall while we waited for a table.
The sun had set before we were seated.
Here comes our food. I had the crispy pork belly (tasty), and Andrea had the crab ravioli. Both quite good but overpriced.
We also had the Bengal old fashioned cocktails. Ready to dig in.
On the way home we stopped on Pueo in Kahala to see the immense Christmas tree.
The Operas of Richard Wagner
The last OLLI class on the operas of Wagner was on Friday afternoon, December 10.

Preparedness for a Cause at Kahala Mall
Andrea and I helped at the Toys for Tots and food donations at Kahala Mall on Saturday morning, December 11. Three preparedness groups,
Ready Manoa, Hawaii Kai Strong, and Aina Haina Prepared, came together at Kahala Mall parking lot by the freeway.
We arrived before 9:00 AM.

Malama Maunalua Meeting at the Academy Learning Hub
Andrea and I went to a meeting with Pam and Doug of Malama Maunalua across the highway in Aina Haina at the Academy Learning Hub on Monday
morning, December 13.
We went up to the second floor of the building where we saw some blue art panels.
On the way home I stopped to photograph some panels on the ground floor with a potted false kamani.

2021 Marathon Ham Communicator Debriefing
I attended the Ham communicator debriefing Zoom meeting on Tuesday evening, December 14. The meeting was recorded.
Screen capture. We talked about what went right and things to make it better in the future.
More people showed up as the meeting got going. I had to leave at 8:00 after 90 minutes.
Christmas Party
Andrea and I hosted a Christmas party at our house for selected friends on Friday, December 17, limiting it to vaccinated people, and holding
it outdoors due to continuing covid-19 concerns.
Friday morning I set up the tables and chairs under the lychee tree.
It rained hard at 5:00 as the first guests arrived. Less than an hour later it stopped completely so we dried off the tables and chairs
and went outside to enjoy the cool calm evening.
After dropping off gatorade at Mom's care home, Andrea joined us under the lychee tree.
Having a wonderful dinner with wine and deserts.
The lights were powered by my battery backup system in the garden shed.

A great spread at the food table.
Rainbows
We've been having trade showers keeping the hills green.
Saturday Andrea went to visit Lenore and she is doing better after an episode of not feeding herself.
Andrea went for a walk Sunday morning and got this shot of a Rainbow in Wailupe Valley.
On rainy Monday, Andrea made these two lauhala stars for the tree from kits given to us from Manoa Heritage Center.
Trade showers continued all day Tuesday, the winter solstice, December 21. A friend sent us this croche tree ornament.
Painting with Friends of Waikiki Aquarium
Andrea and I signed up for a painting tutorial via Zoom with the Friends of Waikiki Aquarium on Wednesday the 22nd. We bought the paint, brushes,
and framed canvases and set up our studio on the dining table.
The exercise was to paint an octopus. It's easy to tell who is the trained artist.
Christmas
We are settling in for Christmas as covid is burgeoning in the islands: over 1,500 new cases reported on Thursday the 23rd, a record for
Hawaii. Andrea has canceled her Mission Houses volunteering for the time being. I canceled mine a year ago.
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was rolled out for launch atop an Ariane rocket at the near-equatorial launch site in French Guyana,
a potential bright spot for a Christmas day launch. We are all hoping all goes well. I worked on the winning proposal 20 years ago, as the
manager of Integration and Test for the space vehicle. The OTA (optical telescope assembly) was a different bailiwick.

Andrea took this photo of me building my scale model spaceship.
Andrea did her weekly volunteering at Keawawa wetlands at 3:00 PM on Thursday. Photo by Andrea.
Christmas Eve
Andrea had scheduled a family Zoom for 2:00 PM Friday at the care home. Mom was self-conscious due to the oxygen she need to breathe,
so Andrea turned off the camera on her laptop.
Friday afternoon on Christmas Eve Andrea took her laptop to the care home for a family Zoom with Mom.

Christmas Day
Good news early on Christmas morning: the Ariane launch of the Webb telescope was successful!
Gingerbread waffles for breakfast! Photo by Andrea. I made that cutting board nearly 40 years ago when we lived on 10th Street in Manhattan
Beach. The light and dark woods have geometric progressions (exponential 1.4) of thicknesses.
I got a Lego bonsai kit from Malia. Photo by Andrea.
I got a Medieval chess set from Tom. Photo by Andrea.
I gave Andrea an Anne Klein watch and bangles (not shown).
We gave Mom a sparkly bracelet. Photo by Andrea when she visited at 9:00 AM.

I set up the Japanese knife sharpening machine that Becky and Eric sent me for Christmas. I hope nobody cuts herself on those really sharp knives.
I sharpened half a dozen kitchen knives, including a serrated bread knife. Photo by Andrea.
Andrea got a pair of laboratory beakers.
Twelve Days of Christmas
I continued to sharpen various knives and work on my spaceship model to demonstrate some things for my fourth book.
Andrea learned how to make a couple of lauhala pineapples for the tree.
Thomas Square
I drove to Kakaako Monday morning, the 27th, for my periodontal appointment and arrived a bit early, so I walked to the newly
refurbished Thomas Square and took some pictures.

Thomas sent me this really good-looking Medieval chess set.
Ben Franklin Crafts
Wednesday morning, the 29th, Andrea and I drove to Ben Franklin Crafts in Kaimuki to get modeling supplies.
We arrived 15 minutes before their opening time of 9:00 AM so we walked around the block and I took this photo of Kaimuki High School
which is right across the street from the Ben Franklin Crafts store.
We were still five minutes early so we walked to Foodland next door to get pork for our New Year's Eve dinner this Friday.
In the afternoon I worked on my spaceship model. Photo by Andrea.
Our plumeria tree has kept on blooming into the winter, so Thursday morning I took this photo of a blossom.
Thursday morning I finished the passenger module and photographed it with a black background. Click the image to see the full resolution view.

Rainy New Year's Eve
On Friday, December 31, we had 1.69 inches of rain in the gauge at 8:00 AM.
Andrea went for a walk this morning and took this photo from the Wailupe Valley park.
After a period of rain in the morning, I took this photo of clouds down around the Koolau ridge at the top of Wailupe Valley.
We watched Thin Man movies on TCM with William Powell and Myrna Loy. Selfie by Andrea.
