Kiawe Bonsai Maintenance

Bonsai maintenance work is never as dramatic as a bonsai makeover or creation of bonsai from growing stock, but it's the essence of bonsai and is rewarding and necessary to producing show trees.

Kiawe Bonsai

I did some routine maintenance on a kiawe bonsai on Friday, April 3.

This is the before photo. It's been pruned wired and growing for several months.

This is after unwiring and pruning. I will let it grow wild for a few months, then prune and wire it again.

More Kiawe Bonsai

I refurbished another kiawe, a twin tree bonsai, on Saturday, April 4. This one I also repotted into a shallower bonsai pot.

The twin trunk (two separate trees) kiawe has been growing wild for about a year.

After pruning and some minor wiring. I put a block under the right side of the pot to show a more upright planting angle.

Here it is in its new shallower pot. It's much more dramatic looking, don't you think so?
