March 2019 Journal Photos

Some interesting chess games I played against the computer this month.

March came in like a lamb with zero, 0.05, and 0.01 inches of rain in the first three days, respectively. I suppose that means that since March has not come in like a lion, it will go out like a lion, as the saying goes.

Wailupe Stream Bank Stabilization

Andrea and I walked down to the Hind Drive bridge after lunch on Monday, March 4, to take a look at the stream stabilization\ wor.

A small tractor backhoe had been lowered in the stream with a crane. Andrea's stream photos.

They were building a boulder dam to trap sediment, according to one of the workers Andrea talked to.

Picnic Lunch at Makapuu

Andrea packed us a picnic lunch in the star spangled box Tuesday morning and we drove to Makapuu to look at the big surf.

The sea was very rough and a strong tradewind was blowing.

We sat at the only picnic table, with a board missing. Photo by Andrea.

We had sandwiches, chips, cookies, and apple slices packed in the star spangled lunch box.

We stopped on the way to the beach and Andrea took photos of the stream dam at the Hind Drive bridge.

I downloaded a couple of sea level measurement graphs for some of my deluded skeptic friends.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center image. John Gardner says it's a conspiracy and hoax in order to keep the funding coming. I counter
that there are better ways to make money. One doesn't see many academics and scientists driving Ferraris.

On Wednesday Andrea stayed home while I went for a swim by myself. It had rained earlier.

On Thursday I noticed the newly planted grass over the sewer pipe was coming up. It took 12 days.

Friday morning Andrea walked up Lawelawe Street and took more photos of the stream work. Here a public access point is fenced off.

Saturday morning Andrea attended a Red Cross class on shelter operations while I mowed the lawn. She stopped at whole foods on the
way home and bought octopus and sardines for dinner.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Meeting

Andrea and I went to the monthly Rainbow Bonsai Club meeting at The Plant Place in Waimanalo on Sunday morning, March 10. President Ryan Greer was in New York so Vice President John Arafiles presided. Secretary Nani White was ill, so Andrea filled in for secretarial duties. After the business meeting, I presented a talk on miniature bonsai.

On the way home from the meeting we stopped up on Hao Street to take pictures of the restoration work on Wailupe Stream.

Aina Haina Prepared Meeting

Andrea and I went to the monthly Aina Haina Prepared meeting at Grace Chapel Tuesday night, March 12. No photos. We planned the upcoming preparedess fair at Kahala Mall, and the upcoming talk on post-disaster documentation in two weeks at Wailupe Valley Community Center.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

Andrea and I helped with the Manoa Elementary School fifth grade class at the Manoa Heritage Center on Thursday, March 14.

The students were divided into five groups for native plant seedling finding and transplanting.

Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's day fell on a Sunday this year. Andrea took Lenore for a drive around Makapuu while I stayed home and worked in the yard. Andrea fixed corned beef and cabbage for dinner and I made us some Irish whiskey Manhattans.

In the afternoon Andrea went up to the upper Wailupe stream to photograph the work the city is doing. Photo by Andrea.

Monday afternoon, March 18, we went to the beach for a swim. The first day of spring break was crowded.

My sister Chris sent me this phone movie (*.3gp file) of her training her dog to search on Tuesday morning, March 19. It will play in QuickTime, but not in Windows Media Player. It's not embedded in the page, so download it (637 KB) and/or play it.

Andrea's letter to the editor of the Star-Advertiser was printed Wednesday morning, March 20.

Thursday evening, March 21, we went to Noi, a Thai restaurant in the Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki, for dinner. Afterward we went
to the farmers' market in the Hyatt hotel and then to the Kaimana hotel for dessert. They were crowded and had only one waiter. The
service was so slow we left without ordering. We stopped at Foodland in Aina Haina for Cherry Garcia ice cream and fixed Manhattans at home.

Rainbow Bonsai Club at Walk on the Wild Side

Andrea and I attended the street art fair benefit for the American Kidney Foundation in China Town on Saturday, March 23. Rainbow Bonsai Club had 30 feet of curb space, enough for three standard canopies, but we used just two, putting the bonsai display tables in the open air between them. Rainbow Bonsai Club particpated in the event last year too. We met John, Joanie, Rocky, Chris, and Hugo at 9:00 AM for setup and John, Joanie, Andrea and I stayed through teardown at 4:00 PM.

Disaster Recovery Talk with Aina Haina Prepared

Andrea arranged a public event in Aina Haina with guest speakers on Tuesday evening, March 26. Guest speakers included Will Chang of State Farm Insurance and Gen Tamura from FEMA.

Hawaii Regional FRC at the Stan Sheriff Center

Andrea voluneered in pit administration once again and I supported the team as a mentor for the Hawaii Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) at the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Thursday

Thursday is practice day.

I arrived before 7:00 AM under a beautiful blue sky.

Our robot was waiting bagged in the pits. We're next to a team from Japa this year.

Andrea was the head of pit admin this year.

The field reset crew practiced resetting the field.

Team members got the pit and robot ready.

I had to leave mid-morning to go guide a tour for Manoa Elementary students at the Manoa Heritage Center.

Friday

Friday is a full day of qualification matches.

We gathered on the ground level and team 359 walked by.

The students did their morning "I'm excited" ritual.

At lunch time I walked down to One Plus One restaurant at King and Coolidge for a plate lunch and took this photo of Puck's Alley
on the walk back. Andrea and I had our first date there at Mama Mia's Pizza (now a different student pizza joint with the red and
blue table umbrellas). Click on the image to see the full resolution version.

Our last match in the quarterfinals. We got picked by the seventh seed alliance.

The robot ran well for the most part, but we lost in two games to the second seed alliance.

Sunday afternoon Andrea made a blueberry crisp. The raspberry custard was already in the oven.
