Independence Day

The Fourth of July, Independence Day, fell on a Thursday this year.

The musical performances at the Territorial Airwaves Gala that Andrea and I attended in June will be aired on Olello TV on Sunday July 7.

Monday morning, July 1, I decorated for Independence Day.

The Black Dragon hibscus was blooming.

Monday afternoon we went to the beach at high tide and high surf. The canoe on the beach had become swamped and they pulled it up on shore
to bail it and wait out the big surf. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

On Tuesday Andrea gave a watershed talk to Punahou students for Malama Maunalua, where she took this panorama image. Click the image to see

Tuesday afternoon we went for a swim. This is looking out over the natatorium pool.

The canoe that had been pulled up on the beach on Monday was still there.

On Wednesday the third Andrea took Mom to get her nails done: "Nails (actually tried a new color), lattes, and Ka Iwi Coast drive." Photo by Andrea.

On Thursday the fourth I took this photo of my LCROSS patch from the mission that crashed an upper stage into the south pole of the moon and then
followed it in recording the impact and resulting plume to report on any water that might be there. Some water, but not much.

Flying the flag on the fourth.

Thursday morning we drove to the Mission Houses and walked over to the Kawaiahao Church graveyard to see the vandalism that had occurred Wednesday
morning, toppled grave stones. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

We also played ring toss and catch. Photo by Andrea.

On Friday the Black Dragon hibiscus was blooming still. Each flower lasts just one day, as with all hibiscuses.

Hawaii Bonsai Association Meeting

I attended the Hawaii Bonsai Association (HBA) meeting at the Moiliili Community Center on Saturday, July 6. Andrea drove and did some shopping while I went to the meeting.

I took this photo of Napoleon, Andrea, and Faye's bromeliad, which is doing well in a shell (center).

The HBA meeting was called to order by Warren Yamamoto at 09:30 and was adjourned at 10:40.

The HBA annual show is coming up at the end of July. Flyer scanned from paper copy by Andrea.

Sunday morning Andrea took Mom for a drive while I mowed the lawn and she got some photos of the hurricane Barbara surf at Makapuu.

Tuesday morning, the ninth, I brought in the hibiscus Faye worked on and photographed it.

This photo is with flash. Tuesday evening we went to the Aina Haina Prepared monthly planning meeting but I took no pictures.

On Wednesday Andrea downloaded the Midweek magazine photo of us at the Territorial Airwaves Gala last month.

Wednesday I finished an interesting game against my computer applet.

Ke Kani O Ke Kai at the Waikiki Aquarium

Andrea and I attended the third event of the bi-weekly summer series on Thursday, July 11.

After giving a Thursday morning tour for Y-camp middle school keiki at the Manoa Heritage Center, Andrea and I had lunch at the Hau Tree Lanai.
I had the Angus Burger, medium well, with fries. Andrea had the portabello mushroom sandwich.

We left home at 3:30 arriving at the Aquarium at ten 'til four and were about fourth in line. By opening time at 5:30 the line was wrapped
around the Aquarium property fence.

After eating food catered by La Tour we went in to see the aquarium exhibits.

People sometimes joke about going into the aquarium to get dinner. Photo by Andrea.

Josh Tatofi, singer and bass player, was up first with his two sidemen on guitars.

A hula halau performed for some of the songs.

During intermission a Star-Advertiser photographer asked to take our picture.

Singer Kalani Pe'a was the headliner.

Rainbow Bonsai Club July Barbecue

Andrea and I attended the annual bonsai potluck and barbecue on Sunday, July 14.

Our first game of Bananagrams! Andrea had to go to an appointment, so we're saving it to finish later. Notice that my matrix (near side) has
only monosyllables, and there's a mistake which I fixed after I took the photo.

I plan to work on the autograph tree in the blue box so I took this "before" photo of it growing in the front yard.

I took a new photo of Faye's hibiscus using a backdrop as suggested by Jennifer. I painted a lau hala mat flat black and mounted it on a
frame just for this purpose, bonsai pictures! With a black background, you can use a flash and the shadows aren't bothersome. No flash was
necessary for this photo.

After lunch we finished the game. The winning configuration.

We barbecued crab for dinner and I took this picture of the potentential bonsai autograph tree for the official "before" shot. It doesn't look
like much now, but we'll see. The blue on blue writing around the growing box says "Aloha kekahi i kekahi," which means love one another.

President Ryan brought some lava rocks from Koko Crater and demonstrated how to assemble them with black iron oxide, lava dust, and cyanoacrylate.

Wearing gloves is important so you don't glue your fingers together.

I made one assembly from three stones.

Then we played bonsai bingo for prizes.

Treasurer Scott gives it a try.

Past President John did a great job with the barbecue steak and chicken.

Food is ready. After eating we had a benefit drawing for the remaining prizes.

After we got home from the barbecue I defoliated the autograph tree so I can see what I'm doing so I removed all the greenery with my bonsai shear.
The front of the tree is more to the right, I think, but that's a decision I will make later when I put it into a bonsai pot.

Monday: I have decided to reduce the crown of the autograph tree. Here I'm making the first major cut.

Monday morning Andrea went to docent training at Manoa Heritage Center. Photo by Andrea.

Mission Houses Tour

I gave my first tour of the Mission Houses as a docent on Wednesday, July 17, at 11:00 AM.

I arrived an hour early so I walked over to the Kawaiahao Church to see the repair work on the vandalized gravestones.

Walking back I saw this interesting old brick building with basalt lintels.

People were working on the hale pili beside the 1821 frame house.

I photographed the Cooke gravestone with the Mission Houses Museum in the background. Sam and Mary Cooke founded the Manoa Heritage Center.

A couple from northern California were my first tour patrons. Photo by Mike.

Matilda at Diamond Head Theater

Andrea and I went to the musical Matilda at Diamond Head Theater on Thursday, July 18, for the 7:30 PM show.

We got two splits of champagne to enjoy while waiting to go in.

The stage set. The play is a parody of adult stupidity from the viewpoint of a young girl.

Friday after lunch and nap, Andrea photographed the potting phase of the autograph tree bonsai demonstration. It started with a nearly magical
interlude with some fairy terns hovering between our lychee, macadamia, and plumeria trees. Photo by Andrea.

We're going to put that tree (on my left) into this pot. Photo by Andrea. I created a separate page for the Autograph Tree Bonsai Demonstration.

Friday afternoon we went for a swim. Andrea dries off after her shower.

50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

Andrea had Red Cross training Saturday morning, July 20, and a Mission Houses tour in the afternoon. I mowed the lawn and got ready for a Saturday evening barbecue. Here's a link to what I missed that night in 1969 because I had to work at the 76 Union gas station in Santa Clara, a video on Youtube, Restored Apollo 11 Moonwalk--Original NASA EVA Mission Video--Walking on the Moon,

Saturday, July 20, 2019. Today is also International Chess Day.

I added more potting soil on top of the autograph tree pot and finished with a layer of wet basalt sand. I brought it into the
house to photograph with the black backdrop. This is the better front, I think.

Sunday I took this photo of our weather station console.

Monday I took this photo of a mame bonsai schefflerra getting some morning sun indoors.

The sun has moved into Leo and the ruling planet of Leo is the sun, so I put the sun flag back up.

Team Magma Boosters Meeting

Andrea and I attended the meeting at Kalani High School in the robotics lab on Monday at 6:00 PM. Dinner of noodles, salad, chicken, and rice was provided by Nanette.

The two hour meeting had lots of lively discussion. A lot of ground was covered and good results were obtained for the future.

The meeting was well attended.

Ke Kani O Ke Kai at the Waikiki Aquarium

Andrea and I attended the Ke Kani O Ke Kai (The Sound of the Sea) concert at the Waikiki Aquarium on Thursday evening, July 25. The hula halau Kawaiulaokala performed first with four male dancers and the kumu chanting. Then the two slack key guitarists George Kahumoku and Kawika Kahiapo were up. Headlining were Ben and Maila.

Thai restaurant Olay supplied food. I had the orange chicken and Andrea had the lemongrass chicken. After dinner we saw the fish exhibits
. I took this photo of the audience on the way to the Aquarium back entrance.

After seeing the fish in the Aquarium, we stopped in the gift shop and got a birthday present for grandson Grayson. Then we got some more
Prosecco and waited for the show to start. We both were getting colds so we left at intermission before the headline act, Ben and Maila, the
first time we had left early.

Hawaii Bonsai Association Show at Washington Middle School

Andrea and I went to help set up the Hawaii Bonsai Association (HBA) show at Washington Middle School on Saturday afternoon, July 27. The show itself is all day Sunday.

Saturday morning I noticed the red hibiscus bonsai was blooming so I brought it in and photographed it. I don't have a tree for the show
this time.

Inside the cafeteria setup begins.

Later more people came to help set up.

We arrived before 8:00 AM on Sunday morning. The exhibit was mostly set up.

At 9:00 AM the general public was admitted.

Ryan Greer also demonstrated.

The Rocky Horror Show at Manoa Valley Theater

Andrea and I went to see The Rocky Horror Show at Manoa Valley Theater on Sunday afternoon, July 28.

Manoa Valley Theater.

The stage set.

A great production. Afterwards we went to the Kaimana Hotel for pupu and cocktails. Andrea sips a cosmopolitan.

We took a walk later and peeked over the fence at the Diamond Head Luaua at the Waikiki Aquarium.
