January 2019 Journal Photos

New Year's Day

January first fell on a Tuesday this year. We got up before 7:00 AM to go sweep up firecrackers next door but found they had already been cleaned up the night before! Then we put the Rose Parade on the television and had papaya, oranges, toast, and sausages for breakfast. The Hawaiian entry to the Rose Parade was spectacular with marching band, pahu riders, and a great float. Here are a few happy new year images to start off the year:

In case you didn't know it, 2019 is not a prime number. 673 x 3 = 2019. The next prime number year will be 2027.

673 is itself prime, however.

Here are the first (nearly) million primes in HTML.

Andrea recorded this video of the fireworks (360 megabyte MP4 file).

FRC Kickoff

Time was invented so that everything doesn't happen at once, but on Saturday, January 5, we had three events. First was the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Kickoff at McKinley High School at 5:30 AM. Second was the Hawaii Bonsai Association (HBA)meeting and demonstration at the Moiliili Community Center at 9:00 AM. In the evening, Andrea and I took Mom out to dinner at Roy's in Hawaii Kai.

We met in the McKinley High School courtyard at 5:00 AM.

Sunday

I created a separate page for the wedding of Eric and Becky.

Our Austrian friend Anita Meldt sent an eCard for the occasion.

Sunday evening Andrea and I went down to the Kaimana Hotel to meet Elizabeth for pupu and cocktails.

Seen at the Kaimana: a special shirt.

We had New York steak, nachos, and calimari followed by a round of tropical itches.

We got ice cream at Russell Convenience and walked a bit. Elizabeth showed us her double room on the fourth floor.
We walked back to the car and Andrea took a picture of the eclipsed moon.

Tom, Kat, Michele, and Robert were there later after we got home. Photo by Robert via Facebook.

Monday

Andrea and I drove Tom and Kat over the Pali in the afternoon to Kailua to meet Eric and Becky at Grace in Growler, a beer taproom for beer tasting and games. We tried various beers, played jenga, and Eric and I played a game of chess.

At the Pali Lookout.

Tuesday

Andrea and I took Malia, Tom, and Kat to lunch at Zippy's in Hawaii Kai on Tuesday.

We got a table by the window for a good view.

We dropped Tom and Kat at the airport and went to the beach on the way back. Andrea talked to Eric's Dad, Mark, in the water for a while.

Malia after a swim.

We ran into Becky there too.

My daughter Malia went with me to robotics on Tuesday of week three. This is the daily tag-up meeting. Later a gave a little talk
on computing mechanical advantage for a lift given a weight and a motor stall torque.

We stopped for dinner at Big City Diner in Kakaako on the way to see the Light Garden there. Dino was trying to drink through
Malia's straw.

In the light garden. Lights changed color and brightness in sync with music.

Lots of picture taking.

It has been a popular place.

Afterward we browsed through stores in Ward Village. This is Martin and MacArthur.

Wednesday

Eric and Becky picked me up in the morning to go body surfing at Makapuu on Wednesday.

We took our swim fins and two boogie boards. Photo by Becky.

Back home Andrea brought Mom for a visit, then headed back to the care home.

Then Becky and Eric read their cards and messages received at the wedding reception.

We went to the beach in the afternoon, meeting Becky and Eric there, and Malia went with me for exercise bar work after a swim.

Bar dips, pull-ups, then more bar dips.

Sunbathing beauties!

Thursday

Andrea and I drove Malia to the airport early Thursday morning and then had lunch at the Like Like Drive In on Keamoku on the way back home.

We met Eric and Becky at Sans Souci Beach for an afternoon swim.

We had champagne under the lychee tree.

I barbecued chicken and later Bill and Xitlali came by for a bite to eat.

Friday

Eric helped me with pole sawing again, taking down a large branch from the avocado tree in the morning Friday the 25th. This is Lenore's 94th birthday, and also my friend Ron Van Clief's birthday, who is 76.

Andrea and I took Becky and Eric to the beach and ran into Bill there. Here he is with Xitlali, who was asleep.

Saturday

After lunch Saturday the 26th Eric helped me take some aerial photos with the quadrotor Malia gave me for Christmas. Then he and Becky packed up to get ready to fly back to Connecticut. Trump caved yesterday so the government is open again today and we're hoping the TSA inspection at the airports will be fully staffed.

Avenue Q at Manoa Valley Theater

Andrea and I went to see Avenue Q at Manoa Valley Theater (MVT) on Sunday afternoon, January 27th.

We arrived early as usual but there was already a long line of ticket holders for the sold out show. Fortunately, as season
ticket holders, we got in the shorter line on the right.

The stage set with band before the show. No photography of the performance allowed.

Andrea and I walked outside during intermission. MVT grounds are a graveyard.

FRC Build Season Week Four

I attended some of the evening build sessions in week four.

Monday

Two main drive gear assemblies have been built and some frame pieces cut.

Operating the NC mill.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

Andrea and I helped conduct tours at the Manoa Heritage Center on Tuesday morning, January 29.

The fourth grade children arrived on a school bus.

Tuesday afternoon I went to the beach by myself while Adrea mailed boxes to the kids. Between the jellyfish and the rain
I had the beach pretty much to myself. The lifeguard said two people got stung there today, but they were out floating around
by the windsock for an hour, so I swam briefly in shallow water with no problem.

Later I saw about a hundred box jellies washed up at the Sans Souci Apartments end. It's nine days after the full moon.

I went to robotics in the evening and the robot is coming together.

The daily tag-up meeting.

Doing the math for the cascade lift.

Later Tuesday evening Andrea and I went to the Aina Haina Prepared meeting on special needs.

University of Hawaii Better Tomorrow Speaker Series

Andrea and I attended the University of Hawaii (UH) Better Tomorrow Speaker Series event with Ellis Henican, titled "Confessions of an Enemy of the People: Media in the Age of Trump," on Wednesday evening, January 30.

We parked on the mauka (mountain) side of the UH quad and then walked to the Architecture Building on University Avenue.

We passed George Hall and I had to get a photograph. I never took any classes there but I walked through the quad to get to the
business school building for a psychology class back in the 70s.

The auditorium was eventually about half filled for the talk.

Across the room from us Ellis Henican chatted with former governor Neil Abercrombie. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

Noises Off at Diamond Head Theater

Andrea and I went to see the play Noises Off at Diamond Head Theater on Thursday evening, January 31.

We arrived at the 1977 English farce at twilight in light rain. The slope of Diamond Head is on the left.

Twenty-five minutes to show time at 7:30 PM. The set was the interior of a large house that rotated to present a backstage view of this
play within a play.

An interesting chess game I played against the computer this month.
