Saturday Barbecue

On Saturday, November 3, I mowed the lawn, worked on bonsai, and set up the Big Green Egg to grill some bratwurst.

Election Day

Tuesday, November 6, the Democratic Party won back the House of Representatives.


We walked down to Madam Pho's for lunch and walked back with some things from Foodland.

Veteran's Day Weekend

Sunday, November 11, is the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. Veteran's Day holiday is Monday the 12th.


Andrea and I received our SkyWarn certificates in the mail on Saturday.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Meeting

Sunday Andrea and I attended the November bonsai club meeting at Mike's house, a special event to see his bonsai collection, which is quite impressive.


We held the business meeting in Mike's garage. Ryan was elected President for 2019. John and Scott continue as Vice President
and Treasurer. Nani was elected Secretary.

The club went to 99 Ranch food court for lunch. I had orange chicken plate and Andrea had chow mein.

Aina Haina Prepared

Andrea and I attended the Aina Haina Prepared meeting Tuesday, November 13, at Grace Chapel across the highway in Aina Haina.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

Andrea and I helped at the Fern Elementary School tour at the Manoa Heritage center on Thursday, November 15.


On the terrace first grade keiki did leaf rubbings of kukui and naupaka.


With hau pua (flowers) at the hau arbor.

12th Avenue Grill Wine Pairing Dinner

Andrea and I attended the wine pairing event at 12th Avenue Grill in Kaimuki on Thursday evening, November 15th.


We went for a swim in the afternoon. The Veteran's Day decorations and lei were still at the memorial stone.

Mits Aoki Legacy Foundation Luncheon

Andrea and I attended the fourth annual Mits Aoki Legacy Foundation luncheon at the Church of the Crossroads on Sunday, November 18.


The luncheon was held in Weaver Hall at the Church of the Crossroads on University Avenue just makai of the H1 freeway.


Just about ready to start at noon (12:13 PM).


Jeanette of Kokua Mau was honored.


After lunch there was a panel discussion about the new law allowing physician assisted suicide.

Shipment Day at the Manoa Valley Theater

After the Mits Aoki luncheon Andrea and I attended play about a young woman diagnosed with leprosy at Manoa Valley Theater.


The stage set. As I had supposed, the play is a bit of a downer. She gets quarantined and then shipped to Kalaupapa on Molokai.
Ka lau papa means literally the flat leaf. It is a wide flat area surrounded by insurmountable cliffs.


Afterward we went for drinks and pupu at the Kaimana Hotel Beach Bar.

Lunch with Mom at Gyotaku

Andrea took Lenore to a dental appointment on Monday morning, November 19. Afterward I joined them at Gyotaku in Niu Valley Shopping Center for lunch.


I arrived first and got us a table.


A large squid gyotaku on the back wall.


There was a swordfish gyotaku on the wall above our table.


After our swim at Sans Souci Beach we saw a fisherman catch a papio on a line and lure.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

Andrea and I helped with a fifth and sixth grade tour at Manoa Heritage Center on Tuesday, November 20.


Students came from Voyager School, a public charter school in Manoa.

Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 22nd, we had some friends over for dinner.

Dinner at Roy's

Saturday, November 24th, we we picked up Mom from the care home and met cousin Lynn at Roy's for dinner.


The waiter took our photo for us. I had the Kauai prawns, Mom and Andrea had the salmon, and Lynn had the opakapaka.


The sun set just off Diamond Head just before six.

InterNations Meeting at the Kapiolani Hotel

Andrea and I attended the InterNations meeting at the Kapiolani Hotel overlooking its epynomous park on Wednesday evening, November 28th.


I scanned the cover of the science fiction book I'm currently reading. Another female science fiction writer, in the style of Heinlein.


We arrived at the Kapaiolani Hotel at a quarter to six.


A great view of the park and Diamond Head from the third floor pool deck and restaurant.


A musician played and sang rock tunes. He covered Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

Manoa Heritage Center Thankyou Luncheon

Andrea and I attended the on Thursday, November 29th.


Plumbing work started Thursday morning.


Digging a trench for a new sewer pipe.

Luthier Kilin Reece had set up a display of Hawaiian muusic items.


Andrea was honored with a ti lei.


Kilin Reece gave an informative talk centered around Mekia Kealakai.


Buffet lunch was served after the talk.

I went for a swim in the afternoon while Andrea stayed home and I saw this lantern fish washed up dead.


The plumbing excavation is progressing.

Sewer Line Replacement Plumbing Work

Plumbing work continued on Friday, November 30th.


The sewer connection has been removed right down to the city's clay pipe.


The new bathroom drain bypassed the old cast iron pipe.


The front bathroom was re-connected before I went to the beach for a swim.


The rain squall offshore headed for downtown.
