InterNations Meeting in Waikiki

Andrea and I went for a swim in the afternoon on Friday, June 1, and then walked to the Hideout bar upstairs at the Lay Low hotel on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki for a social meeting of the InterNations club. On the way we stopped at the Flip Flop Shop in the International Markeplace to upgrade our zoris.

Andrea and I arrived early at 6:00 PM and then Tammy, from Germany, came.

Claudia, our waitress, took our picture for us.

After more people arrived, including Simina, the organizer, we moved to the corner fire pit. Photo by Andrea.

The Hideout is a very good setting for a small gathering.

The food served there was good too.

Andrea took our selfie with flying saucer.

The Illusion of Perception Lecture at OLLI

Andrea took me to UH on Monday, June 4, and dropped me off for the lecture, The Illusion of Perception, by Maegen Walker at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) while she ran some errands at City Mill and Ben Franklin Crafts.

There was standing room only.

Maegan Walker, a PhD candidate in psychology at UH, gave a very interesting and informative talk.

Dinner with Simina

Andrea and I went to Simina's eighth floor apartment in Waikiki for dinner with her mother and son Kai on Tuesday, June 5. We went to the beach first and then walked over to her apartment building on Kuhio Avenue.

We were a bit early for the six o'clock invitation so we took the long way around Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.

We started with shots of moonshine, wine, and pupu.

Cheers! Photo by Simina.

Cross Island Community Resilience Network (CICRN) Quarterly Meeting

Andrea and I went to the CICRN quarterly meeting on Wedesday morning, June 6, which was hosted by Aina Haina Prepared at Wailupe Valley Community Park.

We arrived an hour early at 9:30 to help set up so I walked up the lawn to take some pictures. This is the million gallon water tank.

The quarterly meeting was kicked off by April of the city emergency management organization.

Danny gave a briefing on the Aina Haina Prepared response to the flooding on Friday the thirteenth in May.

Lucie and the Perfect Wave at the Doris Duke Theater

When we had dinner with Simina on Tuesday she told us about Lucie and her new CD release and her upcoming performance at the Doris Duke Theater, so Andrea and I got tickets and attended on Thursday evening, June 7. Simina and two of her friends met us there.

Andrea, Simina, and friend, just before the show started.

The show started with a solo performer on right handed upside down slack key guitar (played left handed). A very unusual, but good, sound.

The solo performer stayed on stage with Lucie and the Perfect Wave for the first number.

Lucie writes, sings, and plays. We liked the performance and bought her Alive CD on sale there.

Andrea's Birthday

We celebrated Andrea's birthday on Saturday evening, June 9.

I lit the fire in the Big Green Egg and we had champagne with chips and guacamole under the lychee tree.

Ready to eat! Grilled chicken and Manhattans.

Birthday cake with balloon and card. The number on the cake is 1000000, Andrea's age in binary.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Meeting

Andrea and I attended the regular monthly Rainbow Bonsai Club on Sunday morning, June 10.

We brought the club's raft bonsai for the group to work on.

Larry brought some ohia to talk about after the business meeting.

Thirty-Seventh Wedding Anniversary

Andrea and I celebrated our thirty-seventh (a prime number) wedding anniversary on Wedesday, June 13. Andrea fixed eggs Benedict for breakfast and we exchanged cards. I had made a reservation at the Hau Tree Lanai for dinner.

Andrea dug up our wedding invitation from 37 years ago. Scanned on June 18.

After our swim we took a walk past the Dillingham Fountain below Diamond Head to find the apartment building we stayed in together 39 years ago. Andrea apartment sat for Mike Ross, a family friend, and I spent a week with her there.

The halau performed again with Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole.

Friday afternoon I went to the beach by myself while Andrea took Mom to the doctor for a routine visit. Kaiiwi the monk seal was back
sleeping on the beach in front of the Sans Souci Apartments.

Sans Souci Beach

Andrea and I stopped at City Mill in Kaimuki to get a redwood board to fix the corner cut in our walkway on Tuesday, June 19, and then went for a swim at Sans Souci Beach.

After my swim I went to do pullups and bar dips and saw these police officers resting in the shade by the Natatorium.

We went to the beach again on Wednesday and my solstice flag arrived.

Summer Solstice Sunrise at Kukaoo Heiau

Andrea and I attended the sunrise event on Thursday, June 21, the summer solstice at 5:50 AM and then went to have breakfast at Starbucks in the Manoa shopping center.

Waiting for the sun. Waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting.

An oli was chanted and an offering of lehua and salt were given.

On Friday we went for a swaim. Andrea looks at the fish as she comes out of the water.

I had decorated with yellow paper lanterns as sun symbols.

The Coitos enjoyed the evening.

Chris and Doug had ringside seats for the grill.

There was lots of good food.

Some preferred the indoors. It did rain a few times.

Ke Kani O Ke Kai

Andrea and I attended the second in the Hawaiian music concert series at the Aquarium on Thursday evening, June 28.

I went to the beach while Andrea attended ukulele practice. This mysterious canopy was gone by the time the concert was set up.

Waiting for the venue to open at 5:30.

There were juicy clouds over Honolulu but we got no rain at all.

We got a lau hala hat for Andrea in the lobby of the Aquarium.

I made Andrea a new avatar photo from the image above.
