New Year's Day

January 1 fell on Monday and Andrea and I slept in until almost eight o'clock. After breakfast I retreived some chairs and things I had lent the Youngs for the party the previous night. I found one short string of unexploded firecrackers and saved them in the shed for later.


Happy New Year!


On Tuesday the second we went to the beach and saw that the Aquarium is getting a new slab at their side gate.

Music at Kualii

Andrea and I volunteered to help at the Music at Kualii event at the Manoa Heritage Center on Thursday evening, January 4.


Volunteer Al Furoto asked me to get his picture with the grandfather clock.


Guests arrived between 6:15 and 7:00.


The program started at 7:00. Jessica introduced Mary first.


Lynn Johnson gave background and introduced the singers.


Kelly sang first, a solo from South Pacific.


Sasha sang next, "There is a Place for Us," also from South pacific. That was followed by a duet and more solos.

FRC Kickoff

Andrea and I attended the FRC Kickoff with the Kalani High School robotics team on Saturday morning, January 6.

Saturday evening we barbecued chicken and played scrabble with Paul and Faye.


Sunday morning Andrea took Mom for a drive around Makapuu to Waimanalo.


They stopped at Dave's Ice Cream.


Sunday afternoon I started a bonsai for Keala at Manoa Heritage Center.

Monday afternoon, January 8, we went to the beach and there was a monk seal taking it easy.

As One at Pier 10

Andrea and I went to see the Hawaii Opera Theater chamber opera at Pier 10 at the Aloha Tower on Saturday evening, January 13.


At noon we attended the Hawaii Bonsai Association quarterly meeting at the Suzannah Wesley Community Center in Kalihi.


After parking at the Aloha Tower parking lot, we saw this four masted schooner. The Falls of Clyde is on the other side.


We arrived early at Pier 10 and listened to the pre-show lecture at 3:00 PM.

Team Magma Build Season Week Two

Andrea and I supported the Kalani High School robotics team in build season week two.

Monday

Monday, January 15, was Martin Luther King Day.


They built a LEGO Rubic's Cube solver for demonstration to elementary school children on Wednesday.

I went to meet Andrea at Washington Middle School where she was volunteering at the Friends of the Library book sale.


On Monday afternoon I defoliated and unwired my hau tree bonsai.

Tuesday, January 16, Andrea got her weekly box of vegetables from the local farm.


My son Robert made me a reserved parking sign.


5:00 PM daily status meeting.

Wednesday

Wednesday, January 17, I started repair of the broken chair I brought home from Magma Robotics.


C-clamps and epoxy will make it all better.

Native Tree Seed Planting

Wednesday, January 17, Andrea and I went to Saunders hall at UH for native endangered tree seed planting for Outdoor Circle.


First we mixed cinders into the planting mix.


Then we filled the pots.


Finally we planted the sandalwood and other seeds.

When we were done we went to the Kaimana for Manhattans and nachos. They always have an abundance of orchids.

Becky and Bill Arrive in Hawaii

Thursday, January 19, Andrea and I drove to the airport to pick up Becky and then went to dinner at La Mariana Sailing Club where Bill arrived later.


Andrea got a green tea and I got a coffee and blueberry scone at Starbucks at the Hawaiian Air Lines baggage claim area.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Meeting

Eric arrived Saturday afternoon, January 20. Andrea and I attended the monthly meeting on Sunday morning, January 21.


We had cocktails under the lychee tree while I barbecued lamb.


The weather held for a while and then we ran inside when it began to rain.


Just before the bonsai club meeting started at the Plant Place in Waimanalo.


After the meeting Larry talked about two of his native trees, an ohia and a lama.

Baskerville at Manoa Valley Theater

We drove two cars, Bill in his rental Ford Escort with Becky and Eric and Andrea and me in our Leaf, to see Baskerville at Manoa Valley Theater on Sunday afternoon, January 21.


Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went to two operas within the play so the theater was done up like an opera house with a big red curtain.


During intermission Becky and Eric sat on the wall for a photo with the cemetary in the backgrouund.

Andrea and I supported the Kalani High School robotics team in build season week three.

Monday

Monday, January 22, was a day with good weather with medium trade winds.


We have a functioning testbed. Getting autonomy working using wheel encoders is in progress.

Tuesday


My mentor pin came in the mail from FIRST.


Mr. Kwock worked with the programming and electrical team.

Birthday Lunch at Hale Kulani

Andrea and I took Bill and picked up Lenore on Wednesday, January 24, and drove to Hale Kulani for her birthday lunch. Becky and Eric drove separately in their rented red Mustang convertible.


We gave Mom a lei and then waited for our reservation table for six.


With our iced teas and lemonades and ready to order lunch.


After we drove home, we got ready for the beach where Becky talked with Andrea in the water while Eric went to rent a
stand up paddle (SUP) board.


After swimming I went to do my pullups and bar dips as usual and saw this DLNR officer in his truck keeping an eye on the
fishing boat in the no fishing zone behind the Aquarium. She was watching with binoculars. I see the truck there frequently.


After the beach, Andrea and I went to Kaimuki to buy cakes at Pipeline Bakery. I got some marischino cherry scones for breakfast.

Food Tasting at Memoir

Andrea and I went with Becky and Eric in separate cars for food tasting at Memoir in Kakaako on Thursday, January 25.


First we went to the Aquarium at 10:30 to meet Dotty and talk about a wedding reception there.


We met at Memoir, a caterer, for tasting at noon.


We had three appetizers.


Then two main courses, kalua pork and fish.


After the tasting we went to the brew pub for beer tasting.


At 5:00 PM we went to Kalani High school where Becky talked to the robotics team.

We couldn't get a table at the Beach Bar at the Moana Hotel so we went to the International Market Place to look around.


We went to the Kaimana Hotel for drinks and pupu. We had the nachos, calamari, and zucchini.


Eric had a tropical itch (with back scratcher) followed by a lava flow.

Weekend Barbecue

Becky's second weekend here began with a barbecue on Friday evening, January 26.


Friday morning I lifted weights and ran. I took this photo of the hibiscus bonsai that Faye worked on when she stayed her earlier
in the month.


We went to the beach in the afternoon, Bill riding in the Leaf with Andrea and me and Eric and Becky taking the rented mustang.
Bill went in the water and Eric rented a SUP board and caught a couple of small waves. I caught sexy Andrea in the shower.


Later we had cocktails and pupu on the lychee tree lanai.


We had barbecued chicken thighs done on the Big Green Egg. Cheers!

Monday, January 29, was a day with good weather with light kona winds.


We went to the beach in the afternoon and I took a photo of the anchored boat that DLNR has been interested in.

Tuesday

Tuesday, January 30, was a humid day with stronger kona winds.


Noah and Don were at the white board going over necessary robot commands.

Everyone was busy. I calculated the buckling strength of the 45 inch lift cylinder. It's good for about 50 pounds which is sufficient.


The CNC mill was running, cutting polycarbonate gear box plates.

Wednesday

Programming team testing pneumatic solenoids.


Last year's robot on the table for canibalization of pneumatic parts.

Chess games played in January.
