Sans Souci Beach

On Thursday and Friday, June 1st and 2nd, we went to the beach in the afternoon, but I only got a photo on Friday.

Friday morning I continued the cement work in the back yard, an edging border on the planter wall.

March for Truth

Saturday morning, June 3rd, Andrea took Joleen to Waikiki for the March for Truth, while I stayed home and worked on the planter edging.

They met at Kalakaua Park.

They marched past Trump tower.

Wisp Movie Event

Sunday evening, June 4th, Andrea and I attended the movie event at Wisp restaurant with the featured film Waikiki: Riding the Waves of Change, by our friend Caroline Yacoe. The movie event celebrated ten years of the documentary film. This was followed by a large fireworks display over the water in Waikiki put on by Royal Cosmetics, a Japanese firm, as a celebration of their thirtieth anniversary.

We had a dinner reservation. The tables were all filled.

There was additional seating in the front for non-diners.

Wisp was out of gelato so afterward we went to Russel Convenience for ice cream. Then we walked to the water to see the fireworks.

This was a special Sunday fireworks event, a very large display, with some ten inch mortars. The show was spectacular.

We went to the beach Tuesday afternoon and I saw some serious work happening on the lawn at the aquarium.

On Wednesday my poinciana started blooming.

Andrea's Birthday

Andrea turned three squared times seven years old on Friday, June 9th. We went to the Hawaii State Art Museum for a tour of Hawaiian Art, an enrichment event with the Manoa Heritage Center. After working in the yard in the afternoon, we went to Sarento's at the Top of the I for birthday dinner.

We parked at Kukui Plaza and walked to the State Art Museum.

We gathered in the lobby for the 10:30 tour.

Our tour guide is in the black shirt. He's very enthusiastic about public art.

Mary Cooke joined us in the tour.

I liked this abstract in the modern section. Painted in 1995, the artist was born in 1949, a very good year. Click the image to

We walked around the Ilikai after leaving the car with the valet. A conch shell blower was announcing ahiahi (evening torchlighting).

We shared a seafood sausage small plate with our cosmpolitan and Manhattan.

Andrea had the Greek coffee drink and I had the Italian one.

The evening was topped off with the 7:45 Friday evening fireworks at the Hilton Hawaiian.

Rainbow Bonsai Club

As Secretary and President, Andrea and I attended the monthly club meeting on Sunday morning, June 11th.

After the business meeting, Past President John Arafiles talked about two of the bonsai he brought.

Thirty-sixth Wedding Anniversary

Andrea's and my 36th wedding anniversary came on Tuesday, June 13th. We exchanged cards and Andrea gave me an aloha shirt by Kahala with scenes from Haleiwa. We went to the beach in the afternoon and attended the Aina Haina Prepared hurricane meeting at Calvary by the Sea in the evening.

At the beach I saw a policeman talking to a man in a Maserati.

I noticed not one, but three police cars.

On Wednesday morning Andrea picked lychee from our tree.

In the afternoon we went to the beach and I saw Jerry with the sodded area.

In the evening we went to Roy's in Hawaii Kai for cocktails and pupu. We had the kin chee seafood panckake, the dim sum canoe for two,
and the crispy Brussels sprouts.

Our waiter gave us a special dessert in honor of our 36th anniversary.

Andrea took this closeup.

Ke Kani O Ke Kai

Andrea and I went to the first of six summer concerts at the Aquarium on Thursday, June 15th. Ke Kani O Ke Kai is Hawaiian for The Sound of the Sea. The concert, held every two weeks in the summer, is a fundraiser for the Waikiki Aquarium. The lineup was Jerry Santos and Kamuela Kimokeo, Osorio Ohana, and Hot Club of Hulaville.

In the morning I took a picture of my refurbished "beach."

To the east is the nice old banyan that Mark Twain (Samuel Clemmons) wrote about in his newspaper reports from Hawaii.

Andrea wore her new pussy ears hat. We had lau lau plates catered by Haile's on Kapahulu.

Kamuela Kimokeo and Jerry Santos took the stage first.

Andrea and Joleen took a selfie.

Hot Club Hulaville were sensational.

John Gardner sent me this photo after receiving the book I sent him.

Andrea and I stayed home Saturday, June 17th, and watched the homecoming ceremonies of the Hokulea on TV.

Here is the text of Nainoa Thompson's speech, transcribed by Andrea.

Fathers' Day

Andrea and I went to a movie and dinner night at Wisp on Fathers' Day, Sunday, June 18th. We bought concrete at City Mill in the morning and stopped to visit Mom on the way home. Andrea then vacuumed and washed the car.

I walked out to the breakwater beyond the Diamond Head end of the park and took this photo looking back. There's a homeless camp

Snail Extinction Prevention Program

Andrea and I went to Kawainui Marsh in Kailua with other Manoal Heritage Center people to see the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) snail extinction prevention program facility on Wednesday, June 28th.

We arrived for the 2:00 PM tour half an hour early so we walked around outside and saw the kamaki plantings for raising
Kamehameha butterflies.

David invited us into the trailor to see the snail rescue breeding laboratory.

These are the Lila species named after Sam Cooke's grandfather's wife.

We also saw a single snail, the last of one species known to exist.

Will talked to us about the butterfly breeding and redistribution program. Later he gave us four small kamaki plants to grow
at our house.

Ke Kani O Ke Kai

Andrea and I went to the second in the summer concert series at the aquarium on Thursday, June 29th.

We went for a swim at Sans Souci Beach first and saw this monk seal with her pup. We later learned that the pup was born there that day.

We had food by Cactus from Kailua. Streetlight Cadence was up first.

Kalani Pea was up next. The final act was Hoku Zuttermeister.

We went to the beach again on Friday and the monk seal and her pup were stil there. Photo by Andrea.
