Christmas Crafts

Andrea continued working on her snowman hats.


The Christmas crafts are in full swing on Friday, December 1st.

Friends of the Aina Haina Public Library Christmas Luncheon

Andrea and I picked up Mom for the luncheon at the library on Saturday, December 2nd.


Lots of good food in the buffet.


A great turnout: every seat was occupied.


Sunday morning snowman factory. On the right I'm assembling an electronic Christmas tree I received as a gift last year.


Monnday afternoon we went to the beach. See the coconut grove beyond the banyan? That's what's left of the King of Oahu's thousand
tree coconut grove.

Robotics Training at Kalani High School

I went to assist at the weekly robotics training session on Tuesday, December 5th, at 5:00 PM.


Tuesday morning I took a photo of Andrea's snowman canoe work in progress.


Tuesday afternoon the canoe was completed.


Wayland started off by introducing the subject: game analysis for the 2009 FRC Lunacy.

Christmas at Kualii

Andrea and I helped as volunteers at the annual Christmas at Kualii event at the Manoa Heritage Center on Thursday, December 7th.


I was assigned to assist again with volunteer parking at the house next door when I saw this bird in the mock orange hedge.


Kilohana gave hula lessons to some keiki.


Former governor Neil Abercrombie listened (right) while Mary Cooke (left) spoke, thanking conributors and volunteers.


Retiring board chair Carol spoke too.


Dr. Akina was asked to speak as well.

Friday morning I got this photo in the email of snow in Deridder, Louisiana, from John Gardner.


Friday afternoon I drove to IC electronics supply to buy a couple of 10k resistors and then went to the beach while Andrea visited Mom.


Friday evening I received this photo of Becky and Malia together in Connecticut from Becky.


Saturday morning I completed the electronic Christmas tree and it works!

Rainbow Bonsai Club Meeting

Andrea and I attended the monthly meeting at the Plant Place in Waimanalo on Sunday morning, December 10th.


After the meeting people stayed around to chat for a while.

Holiday Preparations

Andrea and I continued to work on holiday preparations on Monday, December 11th.


Andrea worked on getting boxes for the kids ready for shipping to the mainland.


Andrea put out our Christmas plate collection from the '80s and '90s.


Andrea and I drove to Ala Moana Shopping Center on Tuesday to get items for the Salvation Army Angel Tree Gift Tags program. We looked
for a blender, tall fan, and rice cooker. We got a Moana LEGO set at the LEGO store. Then we had lunch at Islands restaurant on the third floor.

Team Magma Meeting

I took Paul with me to a robotics team meeting on Tuesday, December 12th.


At the general meeting. I gave Paul a tour of the facility.

Holiday Preparations

Andrea and I continued to work on holiday preparations on Thursday, December 14th.


On Thursday Andrea and I drove to Creative Furniture in Kakaako and got a new futon matress and cover. It was folded and fit in the back of the Leaf.


On Friday Andrea and I went to the beach and I saw a rugby tournament across the street in Kapiolani Park. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

Home Away from Home Christmas Party

Andrea and I attended the Home Away from Home (Mom's caregiver organization) Christmas Party in Palolo on Friday night, December 15th.


Mom got a tinsel lei and we enjoyed musical entertainment with hula.


There was lots of good food. Sharon sat next to us.

Saturday Night Barbecue

We fired up the Big Green Egg on Saturday night for barbecue on December 16th. Paul had volunteered to do the grilling, so I just sat back and relaxed.

There was a slight threat of rain but it was perfect weather.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Annual Show and Plant Sale

The club's annual event was held at Noelani Elementary School in Manoa Valley on Sunday, December 17th. We stopped at Starbuck's in Aina Haina at 6:00 AM and picked up a half gallon of coffee, had an egg and sausage sandwich, and then drove to Manoa to open up before 7:00 AM for setup. We opened to the public at 9:00 AM until 1:30 PM.


The parking lot was completely full at a quarter to nine.


I counted about 30 people in line before the doors opened to the public.


Helen was there with her hanafuda workshop crew.


There were some nice bonsai in the display area.


My tree, center, was a formal upright hau. The display was too cramped this year.


A line remained at checkout well into the first hour.


Shohin and mame were displayed in the middle.


The steps to the stage were used as a holding area for plants while shoppers continued browsing.


Ryan did the first demonstration at 10:00 AM. I performed a demonstration at 11:00 on a kiawe tree.

Manoa Chinese Cemetary Tour

Andrea met other docents and staff of the Manoa Heritage Center at the Chinese cemetary at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, December 19th.


We gathered at the entrance gate to the cemetary while waiting for Nanette Napoleon, our tour guide, to arrive.


The tour stopped at the statue of the first Chinese emperor.

We stopped at Chang Apana's grave. Chang Apana was the Honolulu police detective who inpired the Charley Chan books.


Nanette showed us how to present offerings and pay respect at a Chinese grave. I was tasked with cleaning the grave. Others lit incense, etc.

Afterward we went to the Moana Hotel for cocktails and pupu at the Banyan Court beach bar.


The musicians and lovely hula dancer were quite good.


Wednesday morning I received a holiday greeting in email from Asgardia, the first space nation, of which I am a citizen.


On Wednesday I went to the beach by myself while Andrea went shopping. I had the place mostly to myself.


The realtor there at the Kaimana Hotel businesses had his 1916 Ford decorated for Christmas.

Christmas Open House

Andrea and I hosted our annual open house Christmas party Saturday evening, December 23rd.


On Friday I went to the beach and saw this monk seal resting in front of the Sans Souci Apartments.

Faye and Paul provided champagne flutes and prosecco.

Christmas

Andrea and I opened presents in the morning with Paul and Faye. Then we walked down to visit the Whittens. I gave Faye a bonsai lesson, and then Andrea and I went to visit Mom.

In the afternoon Andrea and I visited Mom and brought her presents. She also talked to Thomas and Jan on the phone.


On Thursday, the fourth day of Christmas, I took this photo of Lono with his Christmas ribbon and elf hat. Ku is wrapped in white paper.

New Year's Celebration

I purchased ten thousand firecrackers the Tuesday morning after Christmas at Foodland during a lull in the rain. Carl came over Wednesday to start setting up for the pig roast. I brought some mango logs from Lloyd's house to the Young's on Thursday.

Saturday

I mowed the lawn in the morning and cleaned the Big Green Egg in the afternoon of Saturday, December 30.


We barbecued lamb on Saturday and had cocktails on the lanai.


I cooked this time while Faye and Paul enjoyed the cool and calm evening.

Sunday

New Year's Eve, Sunday, December 31, in the morning I treated some termites in the bedroom ceiling, put new batteries in the outdoor lantern, and got a rope and shackle ready in the Young's mango tree for firecrackers in the evening. Zack and Bronson are the firecracker crew. Later I replaced a rotted bonsai stand on the mock orange tree.


I watch as Paul takes a picture while Faye comes through the gate in the smoke.


The pig's skin is pierced with skewers after stuffing.


The fire logs burn down to coals in the background.
