Billy Elliot at Diamond Head Theater

Andrea and I took Lenore to see Billy Elliot at Diamond Head Theater on Sunday, October 2nd.

Vice Presidential Debate Watch Party

Andrea and I went to the VP debate watch party at Democratic headquarters at Ward Warehouse on Tuesday afternoon, October 4th. Naturally, the Democratic candidate, Tim Kaine beat Republican Governor Pence quite handily. Reality has a liberal bias.

We all had our group photo taken before the broadcast began.

Senator Brian Schatz attended and gave us a talk before the show. He knows Senator Tim Kaine and told us about him.

East Honolulu Candidates' Rally

Andrea and I went to the Democratic candidates' rally at Kalani High School cafeteria on Wednesday evening, October 5th.

In the morning Andrea took Lenore for her daily walk.

We arrived early at around 5:00 PM and went down to the highway to help with sign waving after 5:30.

Manoa Heritage Center Annual Party

Andrea and I volunteered to assist at the MHC on Thursday afternoon and evening, October 6th. I assisted volunteers in parking for two hours, and then I led a tour for attendees. Andrea manned the welcome table with Emily.

In the morning Malia sent this picture of Grayson on his first day of pre-school.

I guided volunteers in parking on the grass at the house next door.

In the afternoon we went to the beach after visiting Na Mea in Ward Warehouse. Andrea read on the beach while I did my
gymnastics at the Natatorium hau tree arbor.

Saturday Barbecue

We had some friends over for a barbecue on Saturday, October 8th, a night of a first quarter moon (half a moon showing). A first quarter moon rises at noon and sets at midnight.

In the morning Andrea took Lenore for a drive while I mowed the lawn. This is Makapuu. Photo by Andrea.

We had a good time at the barbecue with Kauai shrimp pupu and rib eye steaks, but in all the fun I didn't get any photos! We were joined by Lynn and Walter, Betty and her neice Joy, and Paul and Faye.

Rainbow Bonsai Club

Andrea and I attended the monthly RBC meeting on Sunday morning, October 9th. We planned the annual show and plant sale December 18th at Noelani Elementary School in Manoa, and urged people to consider volunteering for board positions at next month's club elections.

After the business meeting we had bonsai show and tell. Brian talks about a nice tree he brought.

Steph talks about her small bonsai.

Botting for the Future

Andrea and I attended the annual Kalani Robotics fundraiser on Sunday evening, October 9th, at Gordon Biersch at the Aloha Tower center.

At the Aloha Tower parking lot, the Costa Luminosa had just begun to depart.

At Gordon Biersch, the Costa Luminosa makes a U-turn and moves out to sea.

On Monday morning, Andrea put the finishing touches on her purple Halloween decoration with skulls.

Visit to Kukaniloko Heiau and Birthing Stones

Andrea and I attended the Manoa Heritage Center (MHC) event led by Tai Crouch on Monday evening, October 10th. Docents met at MHC and we carpooled in three cars to the intersection of Kam Highway with Whitmore Road in Wahiawa. I also created a separate page for these photos.

Andrea, Phyllis, and I rode with Tai, a teacher at Punahou, in his BMW, and we arrived first at 5:00 PM.

The other two cars arrived shortly, also parking on the shoulder of the road. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

It doesn't look like much from the road, just wild grass and trees. After a very short walk, we were there.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

I accompanied Andrea as she conducted a tour for Punahou students on Tuesday afternoon, October 11th.

The bus arrived on time (1:40) and parked on the lawn as directed. Students presented us with kukui and shell lei.

Andrea talked about the Kukaoo heiau. Then the students performed an oli.

Afterward we went to the beach. It was fairly crowded with a line at the shower.

Keiki walked out on the Natatorium wall to peek in.

Aina Haina Community Association Candidates' Night

Andrea and I attended the Aina Haina Community Association (AHCA) event on Wednesday evening, October 12th.

Rice and Stew Dinner with Stanley Chang

Andrea and I attended the fundraiser on Friday evening, October 14th, at Aina Haina Elementary School cafeteria.

We arrived early and while waiting for the room to be opened up, I walked behind the school and took this photo of the tennis courts.

The food was good and plentiful but the event was not as well attended as I would have liked.

Eastside Preparedness Fair at Kahala Mall

Andrea and I volunteered with Aina Haina Prepared at the preparedness fair on Saturday, October 15th, at Kahala Mall at the Long's and Macy's end. Andrea went at 07:30 to help set up and I joined around noon.

Patsy Mink Center Fundraiser

Andrea and I were invited to the Patsy Mink Center for Business and Leadership fundraiser by Simina Van Clief on Friday evening, October 21st, at the YWCA building next to Iolani Palace (Ewa side).

Simina, Jasmine, and Andrea.

The event was fun, well attended, and we won a wine basket in the raffle and a bottle of honey wine from the silent auction.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

Andrea and I assisted with the Wilson Elementary School tour for fourth graders on Tuesday Morning, October 25th, at the Manoa Heritage Center.

Dinner at Roy's

Andrea and I went to the beach on Tuesday afternoon, October 25th, and while there, decided to take Mom out to dinner at Roy's in Hawaii Kai.

It was a beautiful evening for watching the sunset. View of Koko Head.

Our waiter took this one. View of Diamond Head.

A musician brought an ukulele and a guitar. The chairs are plastic but the tables are wood.

ABCs of Bonsai Class in Moiliili

The Hawaii Bonsai Association (HBA) conducts an annual class on bonsai fundamentals called the "ABCs of bonsai." Andrea and I were asked by the HBA President, Warren Yamamoto, to attend their graduating class session, along with representatives of other bonsai clubs, to speak to the class about the benefits of joining a bonsai club and to tell them about our Rainbow Bonsai Club. Andrea attended the final class session at the Moiliili Community center on Thursday evening, October 27th.

The class was quite crowded and several club representatives were standing in the doorway. I took this photo over their heads.

I made my way to the back of the room. Several great bonsai from HBA member collections were on display in the front.
That's Warren up front in the white shirt.

Halloween Party

Andrea and I threw a Halloween party on Saturday evening, October 29th.

Costumes ready. Lenore, Andrea is Aphrodite, Jan is the Grinch, and Mike is the author of Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin.

Halloween

On Halloween, Monday, October 31st, I carved a jack-o-lantern from the pumpkin Andrea had bought before the Halloween party. Then we went to the beach, came home, and waited for trick-or-treaters.

Andrea took this picture of the pelican with her Aphrodite wig and googly eye glasses.

Malia sent us this picture of the grandkids, Trystan, Lenora, and Grayson, ready for trick-or-treating.
