Legislative Presentation at the Hawaii State Capitol

Andrea and I attended a presentation legislative activism and the Public Access Room (401 in the Capitol) on Tuesday, November 1st.

The tile ceiling of the Capitol is undergoing repair. Elaborate scaffolding was built to access this difficult area.
Ten days later I talked to the architect in charge of the repair operation. I told him I was impressed with his scaffold.

Inside the House conference room on the third floor, Michelle Foyt introduced Virginia of the Public Access Room
in the capitol. Hawaii and Alaska are the only two states to have public access rooms to help citizens communicate
with their legislatures.

Malama Maunalua Limu Huki at Paiko

Andrea went to the morning huki to teach watershed science to the students on Wednesday, November 2nd.

Volunteers and scientists go out to mark the area for the huki (seaweed pull).

The area is marked off with bouys.

Neighborhood Security Watch Startup

Andrea organized a neighborhood security watch startup meeting at our house on Wednesday evening, November 2nd.

We went to the beach on Wednesday afternoon. It was fairly crowded, probably because it was a nice day. The wind wasn't
as strong as it had been and there was no rain. Japanese wedding tourists get photographed on the beach.

The meeting was scheduled to start at 6:30 and we waited about 15 more minutes for everyone to get there.

Three police officers arrived 15 minutes early and set up the projector for the PowerPoint presentation.

Andrea coordinated the meeting and introduced the police officers who came to give the presentation.

Thursday Bridge at Our House

Lenore hosted the Thursday bridge group at our house at 9:00 AM on November 3rd.

There are eight ladies in the Thursday bridge group, so every two months it's our turn to host.

Date Night Out in Waikiki

Andrea needed a break so I took her out for a date night on Fricay, November 4th. We went for a swim at the beach in the afternoon and then we walked from Sans Souci Beach past Queen's Surf Beach and Kuhio Beach to the Moana Hotel for drinks and hula at the Beach Bar in the Banyan Court.

On the Way to the Moana Hotel we stopped at Andrea's favorite store, Sand People, and got some gifts for children and grandchildren.

A cold mai tai at the beach bar.

The famous banyan tree. The leaves are thick enough to stop all but the heaviest rain.

The musicians started promptly at 5:30 playing classic Hawaiian songs.

The lovely hula dancer Mele.

I tipped the dancer again just before we left for the evening. It started raining just as we got up from the table.

We stopped at the Kaimana Hotel for a mai tai for me, coffee for Andrea, and gelato with fruit for both of us. We
watched the surf contest at Sunset Beach recorded earlier in the day. We waves were up to about 15 foot faces.

Maunalua Bay

Andrea took Lenore for a drive on Sunday afternoon, November 6th.

Saturday morning Andrea went for a walk and took this photo of a mother duck with ducklings in the Wailupe Stream.

Election

Andrea was a volunteer poll worker at Aina Haina Elementary School on election day, Tuesday, November 8th.

I went to the beach alone on Monday afternoon. It had rained all day, having let up just as I got there.

So I had the beach mostly to myself. I swam and did my gymnastics as usual.

On Tuesday morning I went down to vote and the parking lot had overflowed. I had to stand in line. All the voting booths were used.

Election day is a school holiday so the beach was crowded in the afternoon when I went. This is at 2:00 PM, a little earlier than usual.

Dinner at Roy's in Hawaii Kai

Lenore invited Andrea and me to dinner at Roy's on Wednesday, November 9th.

On Wednesday morning Andrea took Mom out for a drive. This is Makapuu.

Andrea reads on the beach Wednesday afternoon.

We were celebrating the election victories of Mayor Kirk Caldwell and State Senator-elect Stanley Chang. As Andrea and Jack
Nicholson as President in Mars Attacks said, "two out of three ain't bad."

Looking toward Portlock and Koko Head, the weather was beautiful.

The sun set over Black Point at Diamond Head.

Andrea took lots of pictures as the sun set.

This is one of Andrea's sunset photos.

Institute for Astronomy Reception and Lecture

Andrea and I volunteered to help at the IFA reception and lecture at the Art building at UH on Thursday, November 10th.

Helping set up the reception at 5:42 PM.

Third floor stairwell up to the roof of the equipment room in the back of the art building.

Andrea personing the reception table. The guy in the back left with the hat is the architect of the capitol repair work.
We chatted about that (see first photo on this page) and the architecture of the art building itself.

Getting into full swing at 6:46 PM.

Three minutes until starting time for the solar eclipse lecture. There is no other way to get the information except to travel.

Jaenalynn's First Birthday Party

Andrea, Mom, and I went to Betty's great granddaughter's lunchtime first birthday party at her house next door on Sunday, November 13th. About a hundred people attended. Jaenalynn's mother, Ashley, is the daughter of Pam, Betty's daughter.

In the morning, Andrea and I attended the Rainbow Bonsai Club where I was elected President for the next two years. John
Arafiles was elected Vice President, Scott Bennis was elected Treasurer, and Andrea was re-elected Secretary. I had been Vice
President, serving as acting President.

Lunch was served. We sat in the back under the mango tree.

There was lots of food and a double line.

I got a picture of the cake! There was a bee theme going.

Jaenalynn watches the candles being lit.

Sans Souci Beach

Andrea and I went to the beach on Monday afternoon, around 3:00 PM, November 14th.

There was a fire with smoke visible in the distance near Barber's Point on Monday.

We went to the beach for a swim on Tuesday afternoon too, but I didn't get any pictures. I found out the name of an acquaintance I see on the beach nearly every day. It's Bob. I told him it was my mother's favorite beach 40 years ago. He says he's been coming to the beach there for 30 years.

Andrea went to the Aina Haina Prepared meeting while I attended the Hawaii Bonsai Association meeting, but no pictures. Andrea and I were both voted in as members.

On Wednesday morning I took this picture of Emma sleeping in a box in the office.

On Wednesday afternoon, we again went for a swim at the beach, but there was not much of visual interest, so no pictures.

Manoa Heritage Center Docent Appreciation Lunch

Andrea and I went to the lunch at MHC on Thursday morning, November 17th.

In the morning Andrea noticed this night heron sitting in a tree behind the house so I got a picture.

I met Ron Van Clief at his apartment on McCully and took him to the court house. We had late breakfast at Zippy's on King Street afterwards.

Meanwhile, Helen Nakano gave a talk on hanafuda, the Japanese card game at MHC. Photo by Andrea.

I arrived at the MHC a bit later and joined in the card games.

Jenny thanked the docents during a delicious lunch.

We went to the beach in the afternoon and I saw Jerry outside the back gate of the Aquarium. They had poured a concrete slab there to help eliminate a mud hole. I didn't get any photos.

Sans Souci Beach

Andrea and I went to the beach on Friday afternoon, November 18th.

A typical Friday, fairly crowded. Photo taken on my way back from my gymnastic exercises.

It was a fairly low tide, not super-low, but a waning moon afternoon low tide. Kaimana Hotel, Sans Souci Apartments, and
Colony Surf Apartments. Michel's Restaurant is on the first floor of the Colony Surf, looking out on the beach. Recommended.

Meanwhile my friend Ron was in San Diego at the Marine Corps birthday bash as the guest of honor.

Monday afternoon, November 21st. It was a rainy day so very uncrowded. I went by myself while Andrea stayed home
and worked in the kitchen getting ready for Thanksgiving. She doesn't like the beach if the sand is damp. I did my usual swim
and gymnastics.

We went to the beach again on Tuesday and Wednesday, but saw nothing noteworthy, so I didn't get any photos.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving fell on the last Thursday in November, as usual, November 24th.

Andrea had been preparing for Thanksgiving dinner all week, so she had time to work on holiday projects in the morning. Photo by Andrea.

Lynne joined us at 4:30 for wine and pupu.

Lynne brought us up to date on her friend Melba.

It was a pleasant rainy afternoon. We had to go to plan B, my barbecue got rained out. Photo by Andrea.

On Sunday Andrea finished her snowmen craft project. Beautiful. Photo by Andrea.

On monday we went for art training at MHC and then to the beach. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

Aina Haina Prepared School Evacuation Drill

Aina Haina Prepared planned an evacuation drill with Aina Haina Elementary School for Tuesday morning, November 29th.

I decided to stay home and Andrea got into the car to drive down to the school before 8:00 AM.

The event was canceled due to rain, so she came right back. I got this photo of her in her dashing uniform with her snow people.

I went to the beach Tuesday afternoon while Andrea walked into Waikiki for Christmas shopping. It wasn't actually raining, but
the lightweights stayed away anyway. I had my usual swim followed by gymnastics on the bars by the Natatorium.

I saw this ironwood seedling by the Sans Souci Apartments last week and rescued it today.
