We started off December by going to the beach in the afternoon on Thursday, December 1st.

Kapiolani Park Preservation Society Tree Planting Ceremony

Andrea went to a Red Cross event and I went to the Arbor Day celebration at Kapiolani Park on Saturday morning, December 3rd.

I arrived early and parked in the metered places on Kalakaua Ave. after looking for free parking at the Natatorium.

I really like that nice old kiawe tree in the park.

Golden shovels are ready for the ceremony.

Stephany was there too with her doggies, Bonny and Clyde.

Horticulturalist Heidi Bornhorst gave a welcoming address. She has a horticulture column in the Star-Advertiser
and is also a member of the Kapiolani Park Preservation Society.

Deacon Clarence DeCaires from St. John Vianney Prarish gave the blessing.

After the ceremony I went for a swim and saw this free lunch truck on my way to doing my gymnastics.

Tourists being shown the Natatorium. Too bad we can't go in for a swim. But think of all those rich people who weren't taxed
in order to make this deterioration possible. I think my new motto will be "Greatness through Taxation."

Christmas Shopping

Andrea and I drove to Ala Moana Shopping Center on Sunday, December 4th, for Christmas shopping. First we went to Barnes and Noble and got some DVDs and books. Then we went to the new Foodland there and got some oranges and a bottle of Joy detergent. Next we went to Ben Bridge and Kay jewlers, and finally we stopped in the LEGO store.

Inside the new Foodland at Ala Moana.

It was raining in the afternoon so we stayed inside and decorated for Christmas.

After I took Mom to exercise class on Monday I went to the satellite City Hall in Hawaii Kai to get two fireworks permits for
New Year's at Betty Young's and photographed this Masami Teraoka watercolor, part of the Wave Series. This is on Molokai.

Aqua Fitness Birthday Celebration

Andrea and I attended the Christmas themed birthday celebration at the Kuapa Isle Clubhouse in Hawaii Kai on Saturday at lunch time, December 10th.

The clubhouse has a nice second story meeting room with floor to ceiling windows on three sides.

The Aqua Fitness class at the Oahu Club celebrates birthdays quarterly. This celebration was for people with October, November,
and December birthdays.

There was a five pound bag of rice decorating contest as a fundraiser for the food bank. Our entry did not place.

Christmas music by Diane and Mark Yasuhara, "The Hawaiians," internationally known touring duet, now retired.

Enjoying the music after a wonderful lunch of roast beef and baked potatoes.

Rainbow Bonsai Club

Andrea and I attended monthly bonsai club meeting at the Plant Place in Waimanalo on Sunday morning, December 11th.

The Honolulu Marathon was being run while we were on the way out to Waimanalo.

After I adjourned the business meeting some members talked about their trees. This is Mike's weeping ironwood.

John showed his grafted shimpaku juniper.

A Christmas Carol at Diamond Head Theater

Andrea and I took Mom to see the musical A Christmas Carol at Diamond Head Theater on Sunday afternoon, December 11th.

Andrea walked Mom up the walkway on the right.

Kuali'i, our Hawaiian teacher, was there.

Cousin Lynn sat with us, as usual. She couldn't get a ticket for Walter. The orchestra warms up on the right.

Lynn and Walter met us at Paesano's in Manoa for dinner. I had the seafood salad and Andrea and I split a bottle of Italian Chardonnay.

We had good food and decor, and Walter very graciously picked up the check. I tried their fruiti bonini for dessert.

Sans Souci Beach

Andrea and I went to the beach on Monday afternoon, December 12th.

I saw this humuhumunukunukuapuaa by the access ramp in back of the Aquarium.

My friend Jerry was helping to repair a gate at the Aquarium.

On Monday, December 12th, by invitation, Andrea and I attended a board meeting of the Friends of the Diamond Head Tennis Courts and were elected board members (no photos).

We met for dinner at 6:00 PM to discuss the upcoming FRC season, starting a week after New Years.

Winter Solstice

The winter solstice occurred early in the morning on Wednesday, December 21st.

After lunch I went to the beach by myself while Andrea prepared food for the Christmas party on Friday. The fire department
had water rescue training.

A lot going on. The city was pruning the banyan tree by the Natatorium.

I saw a kolea on the grass of the aquarium.

Becky's Visit

Andrea and I drove to the airport on Thursday, December 22nd, to pick up Becky from her flight from New York.

We greeted Becky with a lei.

And a kiss.

Goofing at the airport baggage claim.

Becky uploaded to Facebook her photo of the mai tai I made her. Six parts light rum, one part cointeau, five parts pineapple juice,
one part orange juice, one part ruby red, stir with ice, strain over ice, float half ounce of dark rum, garnish with pineapple and cherry.

We had our party on Friday evening, December 23rd.

Christmas fell on a Sunday this year.

On Saturday, Christmas Eve, we went to lunch at Zippy's in Hawaii Kai.

Boxing Day

In the English tradition, Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, is a day to exchange gifts (in boxes). Monday, December 26th, Andrea and Becky went to Queen Beach for a walk while I went for a swim at Sans Souci Beach.

I lay down beneath the palms between the Kaimana Hotel and Sans Souci Apartments before going in the water.

Emergency Room

Andrea called Kaiser about walking and falling problems Lenore has been having and they suggested that we take her to the emergency room, Tuesday, December 27th.

I went to the beach by myself and saw this squadron of Japanese tourists gawking at the banyan tree.

I drove back to Waikiki after going home from the beach to meet Andrea and Becky at the Moana Hotel Beach Bar.

I don't generally take pictures of sunsets but I made an exception for this one.

Sarento's at the Top of the I

I took Becky to dinner at Sarento's at the top of the Ilikai Hotel on Wednesday, December 28th.

We went to the beach in the afternoon.

Craig, visiting from San Louis Obispo, took our photo.

This one with water in the background.

Then Becky took their photo with Craig's phone.

We arrived early, 5:00 PM, at the Ilikai. Our dinner reservation was for 5:30, so we walked through the lobby and back to the Lagoon.

The elevator to the Top of the I was still out of order, so we took the interior elevators. Photo by Becky.

We had a window table for two. Alan, our waiter, took this photo.

Flip Flop Stepping Stone Project

The Malmbergs gave Lenore a zori stepping stone kit for Christmas. On Thursday, December 29th, Becky and I made the mosaic stepping stones.

Thursday evening we had dinner at home.

Becky and I made a one dollar bet (in 2016 US dollars). I said that in 50 years it will be illegal (for a person) to drive a car on a public highway due to the safety of self-driving cars. Human drivers will be recognized as dangerous and therefore will be forbidden to drive (in the USA on public streets or highways). Becky said not. We will see.

New Year's Eve

City Mill

Andrea and I went to City Mill in the morning on Saturday, December 31st. Then we helped a bit with the fire and the pig roast next door at the Young's. Annual party began at 6:30. I brought ten thousand firecrackers.

We arrived at City Mill with a rainbow in the west.

Pig Roast

The Youngs once again roasted a pig for their annual New Year's party.

Dan and Zack lit the fire using a magnifying glass and the sun.

Zack and his friend Bronson strung up the ten thousand firecrackers I brought from a branch of the mango tree after taking down the canopy. They set them off at midnight, and we all had champagne or sparkling cider. Happy 2017!
