Sans Souci Beach

We started off September by going to the beach, Tuesday, September 1st.

Andrea enjoying the cool water on a hot day.

Coming out to shower off.

All dry now.

After returning home, we went down to the Aina Haina farmers' market to get vegetables for dinner. We also got some French macarons
for dessert.

On Wednesday Andrea took Lenore for a drive to see the storm surf from Ignacio. This is Sandy Beach.

Lex Brodie Auto Service

On Thursday, September 3rd, we took the Malibu in for service at Lex Brodie's. While we waited we walked to Kewalo Basin Yacht Harbor, got caught in a downpour, and had lunch at Kincaid's in Ward Warehouse.

On Friday, Andrea and I went to the Manoa Heritage Center for the docent group photo, taken by Margo.

On Saturday we took the Malibu back down to Lex Brodie for brake pads and rotors and drove back in the Toyota. Then we took Mom
for a ride to Makapuu to see the waves. Looking at Queen's Beach from the Makapuu lookout.

Bonsai

I work on bonsai almost daily, and I repotted my sea grape on Saturday, September 5th.

The sea grape from seed repotted into the pot Annie gave me for my birthday last month.

Labor Day

Labor Day was Monday, September 7th.

Cousin Lynn picked up Lenore to take her to lunch at Zippy's in Hawaii Kai.

Aina Haina Prepared

Andrea and I attended the regular meeting of Aina Haina Prepared on Tuesday, September 8th, at 7:00 PM at the Calvary by the Sea church meeting room.

We stopped first at the farmers' market where Andrea bought vegetables. We stopped at the baker booth and got scones for breakfast,
some bread, and a peach pie.

Women's Campus Club Fall Tea

Andrea and I took Lenore to the WCC meeting at College Hill on Saturday, September 12th.

We all had some of a good selection of cookies, cakes, and tea.

I photographed the silver tea service donated long ago by the WCC to College Hill. Doug Meller and Andrea by the door.

President Genie Trapp conducted business.

Rainbow Bonsai Club

Andrea and I attended the monthly meeting of RBC on Sunday, September 13th. I presided in Marion's absence.

After the business meeting we had bonsai show and tell and refreshments.

We had intermittent rain in Waimanalo.

People enjoyed talking about their trees and receiving advice.

Scott's banyan drew a lot of interest.

In the afternoon it rained and Andrea and I worked on our projects, a small table and macramé.

I got the first coat of varnish on my lychee wood table while Andrea worked on her macramé.

Our niu is having keiki! Monday, September 14th.

The bonsai are loving the rain. We had just over an inch last night.

Tuesday afternoon Andrea continued working on her macramé.

Manoa Heritage Center Tour

Andrea and I picked up Jennifer, also a docent, and went to guide a tour of photographers on Thursday, September 17th.

Andrea and Jennifer prepare to lead the tours. The photographic club will be split into two tours.

We congregate on the front lawn before a group photo.

I went with Andrea's subgroup.

That evening we took in some Hawaiian music and hula at the Moana Hotel Banyan Court Beach Bar.

Cascade Bonsai

On Monday, September 21st, I created a cascade style bonsai. The Japanese term for cascade is kengai, and it represents how a tree growing from a cliffside might grow down to get more light.

I just carried the procumbens nana juniper, to my work table. The natural cascade is about five feet long now and the tree looks very healthy. First I prune excess branches.

After pruning, the first and heaviest wire is put on the main trunk.

After wiring and bending, the trunk is shaped into an S-curve.

After combing and pruning the roots.

After potting into a tall Japanese cascade pot. I hope it lives because it will be beautiful someday.

Tuesday after lunch I hung Andrea's macrame on the wall. She and I both posted photos of it to Facebook.

Aina Haina Prepared

Andrea and I attended the flood preparation meeting of Aina Haina Prepared on Wednesday, at 7:00 PM at the Holy Nativity Church gymnasium.

Bonsai

I continued to work on bonsai during the week.

Wednesday, September 23rd, I defoliated and wired the croton. Photograph on Thursday.

In the Next Room at Manoa Valley Theater

Andrea and I went to the Thursday performance of the "vibrator play" at MVT at 7:30 PM, September 24ht.

The stage set for In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play. Photos are not allowed during the performance.

Kaala Elementary School Tour at Manoa Heritage Center

On Friday, September 25th, I led one of two tours (Phyllis led the other) for school keiki.

Afterward the students had an art class on kapa design led by Margo. Photo by Margo.

Sans Souci Beach

That afternoon, Friday, September 25th, Andrea and I went for an afternoon swim as usual. Andrea asked me to photograph the parking meeter in case we got another erroneous ticket, as on the day before at meter number 88.

The meter had 21 minutes on it, adding a quarter gave us nearly an hour.

On Sunday Andrea shared this hula lesson photo on Facebook, taken during Becky's visit last January.

Kalani Robotics FIRST Tech Challenge

On Tuesday, September 29th, Andrea and I went to Kalani High school to advise the robotics team on the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robot build. Zack had asked me to come by and explain motor, torque, and gear calculations. Dr. Bill Meyers, who has been mentoring regularly, was also there.

A couple of interesting chess games in this text file that I played near the end of the month. I think it's gratifying that my Homeostatic Chess Player, while it has no openings programmed into it, has invented the Nimzowitsch defense independently using its heuristics. The second game has a lot of really "out there" tactics typical of computer vs. computer chess play.

Net Making

Andrea took a net making class at Na Mea and has been practicing.

Wednesday morning, September 30th.
