Earlier at the beach that day, I had just finished my pullups and bardips when two guys came running by toward Waikiki at full speed, one barefoot with a backpack, and one shirtless with zoris. Both had long pants on. I assumed they were racing, but when they came to the ocean walkway behind the aquarium, they slowed down but didn't stop. Just then two girls came running up looking distressed. I asked if the two men had taken their backpack. One said yes. I said "call the cops." and I took off in pursuit. She said she had already called the police. The two split up so I followed the one still in sight, the shirtless one without the backpack. I saw him put a black shirt on as he ran. He ran through the bushes of the beach bar grill and I gained on him, staying on the beachwalk path of flagstones. I was running barefoot in my swiming trunks, wearing my hat and glasses and carrying my phone. At Qeen's Surf Beach Park I caught up with him as he dropped in speed to a fast walk. I paralleled him about 10 feet behind. I was in a slow jog as I readied my camera phone, then shot ahead about 20 feet, then whirled around to snap a picture. He turned his head and veered off toware the street, but I overtook him again, and continued to parallel him. I saw a lifeguard approaching on the street side of the park. I said "the lifeguard knows too, please wait for the police to arrive." He continued on, turning past the restrooms, and as he emerged on the stret side of the restrooms where the path splits, police cars arrived, driving up on the grass. The police had him quickly captured. I approached and gave my story (this one) to one of the police. Then I headed toward the beach where Andrea was waiting, but saw that they had apprehended the other fugitive too, and the girls were there giving their story to the police. I approached and when the girls saw me they said "thank you." I told the policeman that I had given a statement to the other police, but that I just wanted to make sure everything was OK. The girls said yes, and thanked me again as I left and returned to Andrea on the beach.

Part of the Duke Kahanamoku exhibit. The tiki cup was given to him in 1967 when he was 77. That was the year I first traveled to Hawaii
(Christmas vacation, 1966-1967). John brought his surfboard on the airplane and had it stolen from the hotel stairwell on the second day.
