March 2015 Journal Photos

Wailupe Stream

February rainfall was under an inch, so the stream was dry on March 1st. Andrea walked down to the Aina Haina shopping center and took photos of the stream on the way.

Sans Souci Beach

We stopped by the Diamond Head Tennis Courts on Monday, March 2nd, to put up the address of the courts to help emergency callers to direct emergency vehicles. Then we headed for the beach.

Tuesday morning I took this photo of a lychee blossom. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

Voyager Lecture at the University of Hawaii

Andrea attended the lecture by Ed Stone at the Campus Center ballroom on Wednesday, March 4th. It was raining when we arrived and was still raining afterward.

Launched in 1977, the two Voyager spacecraft are near the heleopause. Ed Stone was the program manager since its inception in 1972.

Photovoltaic Installation

Island Pacific Energy came to install photovoltaic panels on Thursday, March 5th. We had applied to HECO back in May 2014 and just got the approval last week. They were feigning concern about grid capacity then but they changed their tune when our heroic PUC got on their case.

It had rained all night and occasional showers continued in the morning.

Rainbow Bonsai Club

Andrea and I attended the monthly meeting in Waimanalo on Sunday, March 8th. Jason Saito, newsletter editor for Dai Ichi Bonsai Kai is visiting the Islands and attended.

Phillipe brought an Eel River saike, a very nice one.

Marion, President, attended and presided.

Diamond Head Tennis Courts Address Sign

I made an address sign and on Tuesday, March 10th, Andrea and I went to the tennis courts and installed it.

John Veltri, President of Friends of Diamond Head Tennis Courts, asked me to help.

It seems that when someone needed medical help a month or so ago, nobody knew the street address to tell the dispatcher.

Problem solved.

Afterward we went to the beach and saw a monk seal come ashore.

The lifeguard quickly got people out of the way of the seal.

Manoa Heritage Center Docent Training

I began docent training at the Manoa Heritage Center on Wednesday, March 11th. Andrea is already trained. It's the first of six three hour classes on Wednesday mornings.

Kalani Robotics arrived in Sydney, Australia.

Margo let a brief tour during the training.

In the afternoon I went to the beach while Andrea took a walk around Kapiolani Park. Click the image to see the full resolution version.

The sky was cloudy so the beach was nearly deserted. Two policemen on 4-wheelers took a ride on the sand.

Manoa Valley Theater

Andrea and I went to the play Peter and the Star Catcher on Thursday, March 12th. We're season ticket holders.

We went to the beach in the afternoon. I swam while Andrea walked around Kapiolani Park again.

Getting ready to go home after swimming, pullups, bar dips, a walk in the wet sand, and reading some pages in the biography
of Richard Wagner, composer.

Yard Work

Andrea and I worked in the yard the weekend of March 14th and 15th. I mowed the lawn on Saturday and filled in low spots in the lawn with compost and sand on Sunday.

On Sunday Andrea cut up some more of the branches we pruned from the tree outside the kitchen.

Monday morning Andrea went for a walk up the valley and took this photo of some houses on the west side.

Saint Patrick's Day

Andrea and I made reservations at 12th Avenue Grill for Saint Patrick's Day, Tuesday, March 17th.

In the afternoon, Andrea took Lenore for a haircut at Monica Ra in Hawaii Kai.

12th Avenue looks right at Diamond Head. Andrea dropped us off in front of 12th Avenue Grill while
she parked the car.

In side we had Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. The ladies ordered shepheard's pie with Niihau elk and I had the stuffed pork belly.

Yum.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Display at Kunia Orchid Show

Andrea and I drove up to Wahiawa to put my tree in the bonsai section of the orchid show at Leilehua High School in Wahiawa on Thursday, March 19th.

The tree as I first set it up on a dai with an accent stone.

Another shot of the tree after moving it to the left a bit.

Vernal Equinox

Andrea and I took her car to Cutter Chevrolet early Friday morning, March 20th, the vernal equinox.

Campers in Kakaako accross from Cutter Chevrolet. Evidently this is currently legal.

We had breakfast at Big City Diner.

We went for a swim in the afternoon before picking up the car from the dealer. The recall work was free. Japanese tourists
preparing for a dive behind the Aquarium, with tanks and keiki. I wonder if it's legal? Certainly not safe.

We had iced tea while we waited for the food. We had the aquarium table and watched the six large angel fish.

I went back to the orchid show on Sunday to pick up my tree and took this photo of some paphiopedelums.

This is the same paphiopedelum photo as above, but cropped to the center flowers.
