May 2014 Journal Photos

May Day

Andrea and I bought a coffee table from our friend Jennifer and brought it home on Wednesday. On Thursday, May 1st, I took a picture of it in our guest bedroom.

We put the wooden dragon on the table.

Women's Campus Club Spring Luncheon

Andrea and I attended the WCC Spring Luncheon at the Natsunoya Tea House on Saturday, May 3rd. Andrea and I both forgot to bring cell phones or cameras, so UH Prof. Tom Ranker shared photos with us.

It was a full house. Photo by Tom.

Bob Sigall, author of the newspaper column "Rear View Mirror," was the guest speaker. We bought a copy of his third book.
Photo by Tom. Yes, I know he spells it "rearview," which is also correct. I have my way, he has his.

Genie, Tom's wife, produced the luncheon and introduced Bob. It was a very informative talk about Hawaii. Photo by Tom.

Rainbow Bonsai Club Lunch

Andrea and I picked up Tom and Genie in Manoa on Sunday, May 4rd, and drove to Aiea to meet with the bonsai club for lunch at Makino Chaya.

We arrived a bit early so we walked around a bit. Then I climbed a stairway above the complex and found this old former
drive in theater being used as a swap meet.

Looking back down at the retail building with several restaurants.

Inside Makino Chaya after we had gotten our buffet lunches.

The food was quite good and abundant.

On the way home we stopped at Noelani School in Manoa to see the orchid show.

There were many beautiful orchids.

Andrea bought a phalaenopsis and Genie bought a bromeliad.

Project Lead the Way

Ed Dennis flew to Honolulu from Oregon for some meetings with his company, Project Lead the Way, and Andrea and I met with him and his associate Susan on Wednesday, May 7th, and had lunch at the Greek Corner on University Avenue.

On Tuesday Andrea took this photo of the temporary electrical installation next door by HECO.

Ed was a little late so we waited out in front of the Greek Corner. The food was good.

The Big Bang Theory, Inflation, and the Multiverse

Prof. Alex Filippenko gave a lecture at the Kennedy Theater at UH on Saturday, May 10th. Andrea and I went to this event put on by the Institute for Astronomy.

On Friday Andrea and I went to the beach. Many tourists take photos of the Natatorium in bright sunshine when
this side is in shadow. The sky was cloudy (no shadows) so I took this photo. See the kaimana pukas?

Saturday morning I attended bonsai class while Andrea went to a WCC meeting at the Thrift Shop at UH. That's
my tree in the center of the table.

Andrea and I got there a little early and attended the donors' reception. Photo by Friends of the Institute for
Astronomy.

Roy Gal introduced Alex Filippenko.

Alex is not an English major! The conventional thought is that there are an infinite number of universes
(multiverse) that can never be observed.

After lunch Andrea took Lenore for a drive while I stayed home and read science fiction. Photo by Andrea.

We got over an inch of rain overnight and Monday morning Andrea took this video:

Parking Enforcement at Sans Souci Beach Park

At Sans Souci Beach for our daily swim, on Wednesday, May 14th, I saw a warning placard on a car parked out of a stall. Having seen cars parked like this almost daily for the last three years, I was somewhat surprised that they had started noticing and enforcing, so I took a picture.

This is the warning placed by the Department of Parks and Recreation.

This is the walkway they park in every day. We'll see if this enforcement is real.

I had replaced the rope on the Stairway to the Stream with a red one and took a picture of it Thursday morning.

Date Night

Andrea and I went out for a date night in Waikiki on Thursday, May 15th. I wore the new Rix aloha shirt she bought me earlier in the day.

As we crossed the street to go to Park restaurant at the Lotus, we noticed this Cinderella coach so I took a picture.
As described in Prof. Johnson's history of Honolulu, the City has been trying to get HECO to underground the power
lines for over half a century now, without very much luck. Perhaps more intestinal fortitude is called for.

We found that Park had gone out of business so we went to the Beach Bar at the Kaimana Hotel. Photo by Andrea.

After a couple of Manhattans and some nachos, we walked to the Moana Hotel's Banyan Court bar. A car is parked
illegally in the spot that had a car that got the warning the day before.

I don't generally take pictures of clouds, rainbows, flower, or sunsets (because I'm trying to limit the quantity
of my photographs), but I do take pictures of Andrea with a sunset in the background!

Andrea took lots of pictures of the sunset. Photo by Andrea.

Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha

Andrea and I walked down to Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha for shave ice on Saturday afternoon, May 17th.

It was an overcast day and they weren't very crowded.

Clybourne Park at Manoa Valley Theater

Andrea and I went to Manoa Valley Theater on Tuesday, May 20th for their excellent production preview of Clybourne Park, a play about race relations in Chicago in 1959 and 2009.

Andrea paused at the street entrance so I could get the photograph.

This is the stage set before the performance. A white family is preparing to move out of a house sold to a black family.

Front Room Floor Project

Andrea decided to do the front room floor in decoupage, as she did some of the others. She started on Wednesday, May 21st.

She had removed the straw mat floor covering that had been there for decades and had cleaned the painted concrete.

Then she removed all the furniture from the room. I helped.

I walked down the street to get a picture of this abandoned boat. Two flat tires and no motor and no license plate on
the trailer. I called HPD to report it and they told me to call 911, so I did. It's been there for two weeks.

It's actually a fairly big job but Andrea is amazing.

Andrea took this picture Thursday morning.

I took this one a little later.

Thursday night, after two coats of polyurethane by Andrea, we went to Outback for dinner.

Bonsai Class

Andrea and I went to our weekly bonsai class at Keith and Steph's house in Kailua on Saturday, May 24th.

Starting or propagating bonsai by planting cuttings.

We went shopping for a rug to go under the coffee table in the front room and then had lunch at Kincaid's in Ward Warehouse.

The old Fisherman's Warf restaurant has been closed for years and will be torn down soon.

Memorial Day

Andrea and I stayed home on Memorial Day, Sunday, May 25th.

I started refurbishing the two surfboards I got off the street last year.

Andrea tries out the shooter game I made for the grandkids next door.

Our neighbors invited us for a barbecue dinner. Floyd and his son Kevin do the cooking.

We ate under the mango tree.

Popsicles for dessert.

On Monday Andrea and I went to the Manoa Valley Theater to see Mark Twain Rides Again, a two hour show by a Mark Twain
impersonator. The Devil made a guest appearance.

Surfboard Refurbishment

I continued refurbishing the two surfboards I got off the street.

Queen Emma Ball

Andrea and I volunteered to help at the Queen Emma Ball, a fundraiser for Saint Andrew's Priory on Thursday, May 29th.

The Priory band provided entertainment.

The fundraiser was well attended in their eighth year.

Kalani Robotics Move

Andrea and I helped the robotics team move to their new space at Kalani High School on Friday, May 30th.

There's a student sculpture garden behind the new room.

Bonsai Class

Andrea went to the Thrift Shop for reorganization while I attended the final bonsai class on Saturday, May 31st.

Keith talks about potting.

We all got two plastic bonsai pots to repot our two trees.

Everyone was busy.

Afterward we had a graduation ceremony and a great lunch.
