Aiea Loop Trail Hike

Andrea and I met the Women's Campus Club hiking group at the UH Thrift Shop on Sunday morning, September 1st, and rode with Annette to the Aiea Loop Trail. There we met Mary and took the three hour hike of 4.8 miles.

We took the clockwise direction and paused for a view at the lookout bench.

Off we go through a grove.

A view looking south.

Auto Lunch Bunch

Andrea and I went to the monthly Auto Lunch Bunch meeting at the Waikiki Yacht Club on Tuesday, September 3rd.

At the entrance to the yacht club. The mermaid statue is gone.

Bill Maloney (seated, left) started the meeting and next came the auto industry report.

Comic Andy Bumatai (standing) was the featured guest speaker.

On the way out of the yacht club we stopped to look at a 1956 Chevy Cameo truck.

Later we went to Niu Valley Middle School (NVMS) for Lego League. Students worked on robot mission strategy.

After the beach we came home to an unsually clear ridge above Wailupe Valley (none of the usual low clouds).

Breakfast at Hau Tree Lanai

Andrea and I won a gift certificate for breakfast at the Hau Tree Lanai at the Kaimana Hotel last month at the Waikiki Beach Boys Canoe Club fundraiser so we made a reservation for breakfast on Wednesday, September 4th.

We arrived a bit early so we walked behind the Waikiki Aquarium. It was a very clear over the Waianae Mountains.

That's the breakfast certificate in my pocket.

Andrea was looking beautiful as usual.

We picked up a morning paper at Russel Convenience. Part of the beach was cordoned off for a sleeping monk seal.

Afterward I went to play tennis with Bob, John, and Tammy while Andrea drove with Lenore up to Cackle Fresh on the north
shore. Photo by Andrea.

Childrens' Day Planning Meeting

Andrea took Lenore to the doctor for a cold and I attended the planning meeting for Childrens' Day at the State Capitol on Friday, September 6th. The Kalani Robotics team will have a booth for a bristle-bot activity for keiki.

I approached the capitol building from the north (mauka).

I walked by Washington Place, the governor's mansion, on Beretania Street.

State Senator Oakland ran the meeting.

Later Andrea and I went to the beach and the monk seal was still there, sleeping on the beach.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

On Saturday, September 7th, we took the Lego League team to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for a lecture and tour by Dr. Wang.

First Dr. Wang gave the students a slide presentation with video animations on the general topic of tsunamis.

Then we went into the operations center.

Dr. Wang showed the students how their software program can produce a tsunami forcast in about three seconds.

Breakfast at Lulu's

On Sunday, September 8th, Andrea and I went to Waikiki for breakfast at Lulu's.

We sat at the rail overlooking Kapiolani Park. Note the tiki bar style carved posts and the puffer fish lamps.

We both ordered eggs and sausage: Andrea had Portugese sausage and I had link sausage.

Sports fanatics were at the bar watching a football game before eight AM.

We stopped at several souvenir shops and I found this locally made Ku kii. I didn't buy it, but may try to carve one myself.

We walked around and into the front entrance to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

Andrea took this picture of the drums made from some coconut palms that were removed for construction.

This is a closeup of the Jean Charlot drawing.

We stopped to see Paul and Lynn Forney at the zoo fence and I bought this waterfall painting.

On Monday Andrea hosted a Women's Campus Club board meeting (she's the President).

On Tuesday we coached Lego League. The students elected four subteam captains for the robot build.

The subteam captains then chose up their members and started building four tracked robots. Photo by Andrea.

Kalani Robotics VEX Tournament

On Saturday, September 14th, Andrea and I volunteered to help kalani Robotics put on the East Oahu VEX robotics tournament.

But first, on Tuesday, Andrea and coached the Lego League team at NVMS.

Tuesday was a day spent working on robots.

On Wednesday we had pupus and drinks at Park Restaurant. We had a nice rainbow getting into the car to go out.

Park was dark and had live music.

Thursday afternoon I coached Lego League while Andrea attended the Service Learning Fair at KCC for MHC Afterward we saw
a monk seal at her usual spot at Sans Souci Beach.

On Friday, Andre also volunteered at the Service Learning Fair.

MHC had a nice table set up at the Service Learning Fair.

We left the Kalani VEX Tournament to coach Lego League before returning to the tournament.

This subteam is hard at work.

On Monday the 16th I went to the beach by myself and saw the Black Pearl off Waikiki.

The Black Pearl came in fairly close so I took another picture.

Tuesday was robot day at NVMS Lego League.

The four subteams continued on their parallel robot build.

Later Andrea and I went to Sans Souci Beach and I saw this painted plywood art project someone had attached to the railing.

While I did my 11 pullups, this woman stood motionless with her hands pressed against this banyan tree for several minutes.

On Wednesday I went to Kalani High School to help the VEX team modify their robot for the next competition.

Malama Maunalua Paiko Huki

Malama Maunalua held a Paiko Beach limu huki on Thursday, September 19th. Andrea and I volunteered to help.

We arrived before 8:00 AM and helped set up with Anna and Pam.

The busses arrived a bit late.

The Punahou students got booted first.

Then they were welcomed by Kimo.

Andrea gave a lecture on watersheds.

Pam contributed too.

They they off for a walk through the water to Paiko Beach, about a quarter mile to the right.

Women's Campus Club Fall Tea

We attended the WCC Fall Tea at Manoa Gardens on Saturday, September 21st.

Lynn and Marty helped at the check-in table.

President Andrea chatted with Doug.

Everyone seemed to have a good time.

On Tuesday, the 24th, we got a third of an inch of rain by 1:00 PM so the stream was running

Later we went to the beach, which wasn't very crowded due to the cloudiness, but nice. Photo by Andrea.

Aina Haina Community Association Meeting

Andrea stayed home while I took Mrs. Young to the AHCA general meeting on Wednesday, September 25th.

Wednesday afternoon the monk seal was back at Sans Souci Beach.

The meeting was held at 7:00 PM in the Aina Haina Elementary School cafeteria.

Over 100 people attended. Evidently the 9.5 acres above Hao Street was allowed to remain in private hands by the Mufi Hanneman
administration in 1999 in a secret deal.

Out-going AHCA President Wayson was given an award. Art Mori also played a video about the effort to stop the illegal development by scoff-laws.

Malama Maunalua Paina

Andrea and I attended the Malama Maunalua Paina at the clubhouse on Koko Isle in Hawaii Kai on Thursday, September 26th.

NVMS Lego League

Andrea and I coached NVMS Lego League as usual on Saturday, September 28th.

The first hour was spent working on the Tsunami Care Center project.

The second hour was spent working on the robot missions.

All the students are totally engaged.

Afterward Andrea and I stopped at Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha. I got a copy of Rodney Chang's third volume of
Night Flights, a book of local stories.

Andrea's Visit to Virginia

On Monday, September 30th, I drove Andrea to the airport for her flight to Virginia to visit Malia and the grandkids. Justin ison deployment on his submarine.

After dropping Andrea at HNL, I went to the beach. A large rain cloud visited the airport about an hour before Andrea's
plane was due to depart.

15 minutes later, the airport is completely socked in. The Delta flight left on time.
