Wailupe Stream Volunteer Cleanup with Malama Maunalua

Danny, Andrea, Pam, and I helped organize and run the first volunteer Wailupe Stream cleanup at the lower stream on Saturday, March 2nd.


I saw this cake at Foodland on the way back from the beach. Cute, eh? March 1st).


We met at the ramp to the stream at Hind Place off East Hind Drive.


Volunteers pulled out trash and California grass.


Later we went to Danny's house and planted some native plants.


Hazel helped plant some small plants in a growing bed.

Rainbow Wahine Basketball Game

Later on Saturday, March 2nd, we went with David, Wendy, Doug, Beverly, and Christine to see the Rainbow Wahine basketball team play the Cal State Northridge Matators.


We had a row fairly close to the court.


The action was intense with the Wahine winning 65 to 61.


Afterward Andrea and I ate dinner at Kit and Kitchen. She's hot!

Horan visit

On Sunday, March 3rd, we went to Kahaluu to visit the Horans and their house guests Mark and Angelica.


We had an early breakfast at Jack's restaurant in Aina Haina.


We had lunch at Horan's. Mark fixed stir fried rice.

Neighborhood Board Meeting

On Thursday, March 7th, we attended the Neighborhood Board meeting at the Aina Haina Library.


On Wednesday, March 6th, we continued to deliver fliers for publicizing the meeting.


Wednesday afternoon I took this photo of a kolea at the Aquarium for Andrea.


State Senator Sam Slom spoke about the illegal yet inexplicably permitted development at the top of Hao Street.

Wailupe Valley Hike

On Saturday, March 9th, Andrea and I hiked with neighbor Jolene up the Wailupe Valley trail. We left the house at 9:00 AM and walked up to the trail head at the top of Hao Street.


Starting up the trail we noticed added braces above the trail for the fence at the illegal yet inexplicably permitted development.


We took pictures of each other.


Jolene had a good time. It's her first time up the trail.

We went as high as where the trail crosses the stream above the bamboo (ohe) forest.

That evening, Ron, Simina, and Kai came for a barbecue. This is the fish that Kai colored.


Andrea at work on Sunday. Wayson told us at Thursday's Neighborhood Board meeting that it was her pictures that had a big
effect. There was no work at the site the next day, and of course, no work Saturday or Sunday.

Yorktown

Andrea and I flew out of Honolulu airport on Wednesday, March 13th, and arrived in Yorktown via Phoenix, Charlotte, and Norfolk. Malia picked us up at the airport and we checked in at the Duke of York hotel.

Williamsburg

On Saturday, the 16th, Malia picked us up at the hotel and dropped us in Williamsburg while she took Lenora to a birthday party.


We started out on the street with the original houses.


We visited a colonial garden.


We watched a pipe and drum band march toward us.

The magazine is surrounded by a wall and has no windows on the ground floor.

Later we had dinner at Malia and Justin's house. The kids play in the treehouse in the back yard.


Justin barbecued ribs for dinner. Afterward we went for a walk to the fountain pond.

Jamestown

On Sunday, the 17th, Saint Patrick's Day, Malia and Justin picked us up in car and truck at the hotel and took us to Jamestown with the grandkids, Trystan and Lenora.


After visiting the indoor attractions, we had lunch in the visitor center cafeteria.

We boarded a replica of the Susan Constant, the flagship of the expedition. It's seaworthy.


We visited an indian village.


Later we went to Yankee Candle to look for cheese knives. The kids play with the toy trains.


For dinner we went to Hayashi restaurant.


Later Andrea and I went for a drink at the bar in Riverwalk restaurant. This is a tile mosaic of Ceres in the men's restroom there.


The next day, Monday, we walked up Tobacco Road and visited the Visitor Center again. Photo by Andrea.


Later Malia gave us a little tour of the military base where they shop (Fort Eustice) and later Andrea and I visited
the Yorktown Visitor Center again. Afterward we had coffee and tea at the Yorktown Pub at the beach.


That evening we went to Malia and Justin's house for dinner. Justin made barbecue pizza.

Yorktown

On Tuesday, the 19th, Andrea and I explored the Victory Center in Yorktown.


We were greeted by one of the costumed actors in the farm village of year 1780.


We had a demonstration of mortar fire.


We met Malia and Lenora for lunch and went to the Carrot Tree restaurant.


I finally got a picture where Malia wasn't aping for the camera.

Davis

On Wednesday, the 20th, Andrea and I flew to Sacramento, California via Philadelphia and Phoenix. We rented a car and drove to Davis to stay at Hyatt Place next to the UC Davis campus for the Sacramento FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).


There are a number of whimsical head sculptures on the UC Davis campus. Thursday, March 21st.

Los Banos

On Sunday, the 24th, Andrea and I drove down to Los Banos to see Christina and Gary.


Christina fixed us lunch of excellent meatloaf sandwiches.

Monday, the 24th, Andrea and I drove the six miles north (Mercy Springs Road) and three miles east to the San Louis
Nature Preserve, and walked the 0.8 mile loop trail.


The Federal nature preserve was established with Obama stimulus money.

Carmel

On Tuesday, the 26th, Andrea and I drove down to Carmel to visit Beverly and Jerry and Maggie and Dad. Here's a link to Andrea's Carmel photos. They include photos of the written family history compiled by Beverly Politzer.

San Francisco

Later on Tuesday, the 26th, Andrea and I drove to San Francisco to stay overnight in the Crowne Plaza Hotel at SFO in prepration for our Wednesday morning flight back to Hawaii.


We had dinner in the hotel restaurant, something "Cafe." First, we toasted with cosmopolitans.


I had the "flying prawns."


Andrea had the New York steak.


Wednesday we boarded the plane for Hawaii. It was only two hours late taking off (Untied Airlines). We walked away from the landing, however. Photo by Andrea.

Honolulu

The day after returning, Thursday, the 28th of March, Andrea and I went for a swim at Sans Souci Beach.


It was a great day for a swim and warming in the sun.


A "floatopia" event was held on Good Friday, March 29th.


A TV news truck deployed a camera mast.


Police were enforcing the no alcohol on beach policy. Here they confiscated cans of beer.

Easter Sunday

Sunday the 31st of March, Andrea and I had some friends over for dinner.


On Easter Sunday, March 31st, this article featuring our friend Stephany, appeared in the newspaper.
