AHCA Candidates Night

The Aina Haina Community Association (AHCA) hosted an election year Candidates Night for three offices, State House District 18, State Senate District 9, and Honolulu City and County Prosecutor. Andrea and I took Lenore and neighbor Mrs. Young, on Wednesday, October 3rd.


On Tuesday morning, October 2nd, I took this photo of the bonsai shelves. I have added four suiseki (viewing stones).


AHCA board member Anson Rego praised outgoing State House Representative Barbara Marumoto.


The AHCA awarded a plaque and leis to the board of the Friends of Aina Haina Library for their work with the legislature in getting
a new law passed to make it easier for local libraries to raise funds. Lenore (Andrea's mother) is the President.


The first candidates up were Jeremy Low (R) and Mark Hashem (D), incumbent, State House District 18.


Next were Sam Slom (R), incumbent, State Senate District 9, and Democratic challenger Kurt Lajala. The "j" in his name is pronounced like an "i". It's Finnish.


Last up were candidates for Prosecutor, incumbent Mr. Kaneshiro and challenger Mr. Takata.


The next morning, Thursday, October 4th, Andrea worked in the garden.

Oahu VEX Robotics Competition

Kalani High School hosted the first of three Oahu Vex Robotics Competitions, on Saturday, October 6th.


On Friday evening, during setup, State Senatorial candidate Kurt Lajala came to visit and team co-captain ZJ showed him around.


A VEX robotics match is underway on field 2. I was honored to be asked to MC for the morning matches. Kalani Robotics team G is on the
field in the blue alliance. Team G is the girls' team.

Moanalua Valley Hike

Andrea and I went with the Women's Campus Club for a hike in the Moanalua Valley, on Sunday, October 7th.


We arrived at thrift shop on the UH campus just before 9:00 AM.


We were at the parking lot at the park at the valley trail head before 10:00 AM.

I waited on a rock at a bridge for the slowpokes to catch up.

On the way down one of the firefighters offered the three tired ones a ride.


We went to the Moanalua golf course restaurant for lunch. Can you spot me in the mirror taking the picture? Andrea, Mary, Marie,
Annette (hidden), May (back to camera, hiding Annette) and Edwina.


That evening we went to Gyotacu for dinner.


We have our wine and have made up our minds on what to order.

Ben Cayetano Chili and Rice Dinner at Kalani High School

Andrea and I took Mrs. Young to see Ben Cayetano, candidate for Mayor, at Kalani High cafeteria, on Tuesday evening, October 9th.

A free chili and rice dinner was served with over 200 people attending.


I don't usually take pictures of flowers, but I grew these orchids myself.


Same with these orchids.

Mark Hashem at Aina Haina Chop Suey

Andrea and I took Lenore for dinner and to see Mark Hashem, candidate for State House Representative, at Aina Haina Chop Suey restaurant, on Wednesday evening, October 10th.


Wednesday afternoon I went to Kalani High Robotics Lab. The girls' VEX team (3008 G) modifies their robot after the Saturday tournament.


The boys' team (3008 A) also modifies their robot.


Later in the afternoon I went to the beach. It was a very quiet afternoon at Sans Souci Beach.


At 5:30 PM we went down to the shopping center for the dinner. Here people sign in for the political event.


Mark greeted us when we arrived.


The place was packed, and the food was good too.

Andrea and I went to the beach for a swim on Friday afternoon, October 12th, and met Ron and Simina there with their son Kai.

The Operetta Die Fledermaus

Andrea and I took Lenore and gave a ride to Estelle to see Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II (the waltz king), at the Neal Blaisdel Center Concert Hall, on Sunday, October 14th


We attended the before-show talk on the composer and his times. Die Fledermaus was at first poorly received in
Austria, but was a hit in Paris and Berlin. Back in Austria, it was a hit there too.

Paiko Beach Limu Huki

Andrea and I supported the Paiko Beach limu huki by Malama Maunalua, on Wednesday, October 17th


Some more commercial activity at the Natatorium War Memorial. Tourists get surf lessons. Tuesday, October 16th.

A number of kupuna (elders) from Lunalilo Home came to lend support as well.


We were joined by seniors from Kamehmeah High School.


The volunteers head out into the water to pull the invasive limu (mudweed).


The limu is taken to shore in sacks and then composted to make garden fertilizer.

That evening we attended the NVMS prospective students and parents night where the team demonstrated Lego robotics.


The next morning we drove to Kailua for breakfast at Cinnamon's. Then we went to a nursery to buy native plants.


Commercial activity at the Natatorium War Memorial is just about daily. Friday, October 19th.

Aina Haina Library 50th Anniversary Celebration

Andrea and I took Lenore down the the Aina Haina Library for the celebration on Saturday, October 20th.


One of the librarians opened the ceremony with some introductory remarks.


Retiring State House Representative Barbara Muramoto was awarded a flag that had flown at the National Capitol.


A Hawaiian blessing was part of the ceremony.


There was a good turnout with cake and manapua.

Aina Haina Chop Suey

Andrea's sister Jan and her son Mike visited and we went to dinner at Aina Haina Chop Suey on their last evening her on Tuesday, October 23rd.


It was a great dinner and Jan picked up the tab!

Bluwater Grill

Andrea and I had a date night out on Thursday, October 25th. First we went to Bluwater Grill in Hawaii Kai, and then we went shopping at Longs and Safeway.


We sat at an outside table.

We had spicy calamari and a sushi tower.

Construction Completion Celebration

Andrea and I had a party to celebrate the completion of construction (C3) on Saturday, October 27th. 40 people attended! Everyone had a good time.


Dennis, our neighbor across the street, gave us two solar lamps for the front landscape. Friday, October 26th.


Saturday afternoon Simina came a little early and helped prepare food.


Andrea worked hard in the kitchen getting food ready.

Claude Horan's 95th Birthday Party

Andrea and I went to the Horans' on Monday, October 29th, for Claude's 95th birthday party.


Horan is handed his reading glasses so he can look at his birthday cards. Some did not wish for their images to be published.


We arrived a little before noon and other guests were already there.


We had some beers in the lanai tiki bar.


The party was in two phases. This is the lunch time phase. Phase two will be in the evening.


Then we moved inside for a prank cake (frosted balloon).


Horan stuck the knife straight in.


Some of the guests departed by canoe.


A former student, now in South Carolina, called with birthday wishes.


For dessert, Horan was served two mounds of ice cream.

Andrea and I carved Jack-O-Lanterns for Halloween.
