The Hawaii Conservation Conference

Andrea and I helped at the Malama Maunalua booth at the 20th Hawaii Conservation Conference at the Hawaii Convenion Center on Wednesday, the first of August. Andrea also went back on the second and helped out while I stayed home and exercised.

Old Pali Road Hike

Andrea and I went with several Women's Campus Club members on a hike on the old Pali Road starting at the Pali Lookout on Sunday, August 5th.

We met at 9:00 AM at the UH campus thrift shop and drove up together in Annette's Toyota minivan and parked at the Pali Lookout.

We paused for the requisite photo by the sign. Photo by Andrea Wagner.

The hike is down all the way to the hairpin turn in the new Pali Highway. Carol (center) came late and caught up with us.

Andrea and I went with Annette to the Bishop Museum to see the realtime NASA JPL feed of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) landing on Sunday evening, August 5th.

We got there before the start time of 6:30 PM Hawaiian time and there was a short line to get in.

It was standing room only.

The audience was being video recorded.

Curiosity landed safely!

The first image was of a wheel.

Two days later, my friend John Gardner sent me this image from Curiosity.

The final concert with Dennis Kahikama and Makana was also sold out.

Nohea Book Signing

Andrea and I went to a book signing at Nohea, the Hawaiian art store at Ward Warehouse, where we got a copy of her friend Stephanie's new book, on Friday evening, August 10th.

Afterwards, Andrea and I walked to Tango restaurant for drinks and pupus.

Makiki Valley Trail Hike

Andrea and I picked up our friend Simina and her son Kai and went up to the Makiki trail for a hike on Saturday, August 11th.

A map at the beginning of the trail. Andrea took this picture on the way out.

Robert, the hike organizer, takes a picture of Simina and Kai.

Simina took this picture of Kai and me.

The area has a great system of trails.

We had lunch at the central point shown on the map.

Aloha Hikers Yahoo Group to coordinate future hikes. I created a special page just for these Makiki Valley Trail Hike Photos.

FIRST Robotics

Andrea and I continued our volunteer work with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) robotics teams.

Becky sent me a handmade birthday card with a chess piece on the front that I scanned with the new VuPoint Magic Wand portable
scanner that Andrea gave me for my birthday.

On Sunday, August 12th, Andrea and I took Lenore and Estelle to the movies at Kahala Mall. We saw Hope Springs
with Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep.

On Wednesday, August 15th, we went to the Manoa Heritage Center, but stayed only a short while due to a mixup about tour dates.

That evening we went to the Kalani Robotics (FRC 3008) parent meeting.

After the parent meeting, ZJ gave a tour of the robotics lab for the parents.

Sunday Andrea and I had breakfast at Big City Diner near Ward Center.

Andrea posted this one on Facebook.

The waitress offered to take this picture of us both.

Later we went to the Made in Hawaii Festivel at the Blaisdell Center where Andrea bought some Ugly Cookies.

On Monday I scanned the fingerpainting Trystan made for my birthday. It's a mermaid.

Hawaiian 105 KINE Luau at the Aquarium

Andrea and I attended the KINE Luau at the Aquarium on Saturday evening, August 25th. Entertainment was by Maunalua, Nathan Aweau, Mailani and Mark Yamanaka.

We have our bubbly and a good table, waiting for the food and entertainment to start.

People arriving and filling the table space.

We were treated to a double rainbow in the sky above Diamond Head. I don't normally take pictures of clouds, sunsets, flowers,
or rainbows (I already take too many pictures), but sometimes I make exceptions.

Nathan Aweau plays guitar and sings while the food line grows.

Hula dancers perform to music by Mailani.

Harry B. Soria, Jr., host of the Territorial Airwaves show on KINE, asked a number of surfing legends to come up to be recognized.

The guy playing the ukulele with Maunalua wearing the hat is Puka. He ate with us at our table.

Greek Festival

Andrea and I went to the Greek Festival in Ala Moana Park on Sunday, August 26th.

Play the greek festival music to get into the mood!

We listened to some Greek music in the pavilion.

We saw Stephany at the T-shirt booth.

Life in Late August

We finished out the month with routine activities, no special events.

Andrea finished sifting all the dirt and is now sculpting it. Wednesday, August 29th.

I went to the beach by myself while Andrea worked on the landscaping. It was a perfect beach day with sproadic light drizzle
keeping the crowds away.

That evening Andrea worked on sorting the Lego parts for the FLL teams.

On Thursday, the 30th, Lenore had her two table bridge club meeting at the house, so Andrea and I made ourselves scarce
by having lunch at Zippy's in Hawaii Kai.

Andrea and I share cocktails (cosmopolitans) under the lichee tree.
