President's Message for Summer 2010 Newsletter

Existential Issue: TDC

At the July 2010 Torrance Democratic Club board meeting, the directors (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary (not present), Webmaster, and Past President (not present), discussed, among other things, the future of the club. We have noted that both membership and meeting attendance have declined in the last two years, and the trend seems to be worsening.

One possible cause mentioned at the board meeting was the fact that Democrats "succeeded" in the 2008 election in putting a Democrat in the White House, and Democrats now feel they can relax, especially as we still have a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. If true, this is a very foolish attitude. Democrats are always in danger, especially when we appear to be in power. Remember what they did to Bill Clinton when the Repugs took control of the Congress in the mid-90s.

We are in very real danger of having another eight years of a Repugligan Governor here in California! We are in very real danger of losing a Senate seat to to Repugligan Carly Fiorina! Wake up Democrats!

Now that the Supreme Court is solidly in corporate hands thanks to the two appointees by G. W. Bush, and there are no spending limits on corporate political campaigns, the USA could take a turn down the path of irreversible fascism. We must fight for our rights and remain vigilant!

Democrats, please, become active and attend your club meetings. Volunteer to serve on the board. We have been operating without an official Secretary for over a year now. Help with requests for campaigning in this coming election. We need you more than ever now.

At the board meeting, we considered three alternative futures for the club:

We need your input on our future, and the best way to participate is to come to our meetings (hint: the next meeting is August 11, a Wednesday, as usual). I will retire from Northrop Grumman this November and then move to Hawaii to help take care of my mother-in-law, so we need a Democrat to step forward to be club President. If not you, then who?
