Participate in Your Democracy

Democracy succeeds when people become informed and participate in their government. One of the best ways to become informed and participate is to attend your local Democratic Club meetings for information and interaction at all levels of government, local, state, and national.

You are probably aware that our own Ted Lieu's 53rd AD seat is up for grabs and that Ted is running for State Attorney General. We have already had several of the 53rd AD candidates speak to the club, and will have more in the future.

Last month, Congresswoman Jane Harman's field representative came to the club to update us on events in Washington, and I have invited Jane to come and talk to us personally. Jane's Democratic challenger in the 36th CD, Marcy Winograd, will be speaking to us at the October 14, 2009 meeting.

The Torrance School Board election is this November. Yes, this November, 2009. There are three seats open and our own Al Muratsuchi is running for re-election. There are also some real nut case destroy-the-government types running too. We need to get involved to ensure our schools stay on track to recovery from the damage of the Bush and the "Governator" years.

Now the gloves are off. Racist politicians are openly disrespectful to our President. Tea-baggers have institutionalized shouting to silence the rational. Would-be intimidators carry weapons to political events. Our view of the enemy is clearer than ever. I now call them as I see them. They are Repugligans, because they truly are repugnant ugly thugs and hooligans.
