Wailupe Valley

1934 - Wailupe, East-side O'ahu, Territory of Hawaii. This 1934 map reveals how Wailupe Valley appeared a dozen years before it
was transformed into the Aina Haina subdivision. Prominent is Wailupe Fish Pond (Punakou Pond) that will be filled over in 1946.
Note that Wailupe stream meanders through the valley. That would be changed into the straightened 'canal' to maximize lot size.
72 years later, the April 2018 floods would reveal the folly of that engineering decision. All of the roads are clearly marked
on this map. Only Kalaniana'ole Highway is named, and beachside residences are noted. But you can see the roads traversing Wailupe
valley for the Hind Clarke Dairy operation. And a road in the middle of the valley that leads to owner Mona Hind's estate. The road
on the right hand side of Wailupe Valley hugs that valley wall, with all of the dairy employee homes clustered along that road.
Next door in Niu Valley, the roads for the dairy and pig farms are noted. The only buildings noted are the Wailupe Coast Guard
Station, the Hind Clarke Dairy buildings, and the Waialae Golf Course. Waialae Iki has a road winding up the ridge to a water
tank. The right rear of Wailupe Valley is described as a 'Gulch', which would explain why the 2nd increment of development, the
"Upper Aina Haina" housing, would be delayed until a decade later. --Harry B. Soria via Facebook.

1938 - 80 years ago - Wailupe valley, East-side, O'ahu, Territory of Hawaii. In this early aerial photo of Wailupe Valley, we can
spot several features that we have discussed on [on Harry's FB page]. First, most notably, the valley is the home of the Hind-Clarke
Dairy, whose buildings are seen on the left side of the valley. Below that, you can see M's Ranch House. And further ewa is the
Coast Guard station, with the radio building on stilts out into the ocean. Dominating the shoreline is the fully functional Wailupe
fishpond, also known as Punakou. The 1 lane each way Kalaniana'ole Highway, completed just a few years earlier in 1932, hugs the
coastline. Dead center in the valley is the Wailupe stream, which in 1946 would be bulldozed and straightened to become the Aina Haina
'canal', enabling uniform house lot sizes. Note the roundish feature in the lower center of the valley, hugged by the stream. That is
a natural coral rock formation that rose up some 50 feet higher than the valley floor. Mona Hinds estate is on the upper edge of that
coral mound encircled by trees. In 1946 when the stream was straightened, they had to blast through the coral in that area to create
the straight canal. My parents moved into their new home in 1949, which was built at the top of Papai Street, across the street from
the edge of that coral bluff. Nehu Place was eventually built on the top of it, and homes were built. --Harry B. Soria via Facebook.

Excavation work at the end of Hao Street. Andrea and Karl are here to document it. July 19, 2011.

The work is fairly extensive.

What a relief that it's a church of God and not the other guy!
