2006 February Meeting

Paul De Rose

Paul De Rose was our demonstrator for February 2006, giving an outstanding demo of tools for use on wood/bonsai. Showing a range of power tools, Paul discussed their uses and drawbacks in bonsai.

Paul brought a dried maple trunk with which to demonstrate material
removal. He discussed the purposes and characteristics of each tool
demonstrating them on the stump.FEB06103.jpg

Paul demonstrated various power and hand tools, and then asked for
volunteers from the audience to try their hand. FEB06104.jpg

Some club members got hands-on practice. Here, Teresa Krzewski refines
the test piece of maple. FEB06105.jpg

As Teresa worked, Paul gave additional pointers, noting that working
on dry wood is quite different than live wood. FEB06106.jpg

Whether power or hand tool, the use on living trees results in a more
natural, "torn" effect than with dead wood, which is likely to split

moving on to his living demo tree.FEB06110.jpg

Paul also demonstrated techniques from a workshop at the GSBF
convention. FEB06112.jpg

Hand tools are sometimes preferred for bonsai as they can afford
greater control.FEB06114.jpg
