September 2009 Bonsai Demonstration

I was invited to demonstrate bonsai at Dai Ichi Bonsai Kai at the general club meeting on September 18, 2009. The topic was bonsai from seed, a form of "cost effective bonsai." One doesn't need to spend a lot of money to have great bonsai. As shown in some of the photos below, some fairly good bonsai can be grown from seed.

I brought some bauhenia (orchid tree, a legume) seed pods with which to demonstrate
the planting of seeds into some tin cans with holes punched in their bottoms. Not
exactly instant bonsai, but an instant demo!

All the trees I brought from my collection, including this Brazillian pepper, were grown
from seed.

Strawberry guava trees are easy to grow from seed, such as this one in the root-on-rock
style.

This is a table grape vine from seed, about five years old.

I have another macadamia nut tree this tall.

This ficus (banyan) tree was found growing in a crack in my driveway.

This monterey pine came from a cone from a tree across the street from my house.

This coral tree came from a little red seed planted 20 years ago.

This Portugese cork oak is one of several I have from acorns gathered at Disneyland 25
years ago.
