Cranberry Gin and Tonic
From Epicurious.com
Festive and beautiful, this creation of editor Nichol Nelson is packed with real cranberry flavor. Forcing some
of the berries through a sieve into the syrup intensifies the drink's fruitiness.
Ingredients
- 2 (12-ounce) bags fresh cranberries
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 1/3 cups chilled tonic water
- 1 1/4 cups gin
- 3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
Preparation
Bring cranberries, sugar, and water to a simmer in a 3- to 3 1/2-quart saucepan, then simmer, uncovered, stirring
occasionally, until berries just begin to pop, about 2 minutes. Drain cranberries in a fine-mesh sieve set over a
1-quart glass measuring cup, then reserve 2 cups cranberries and force remaining berries through sieve into syrup.
Discard solids remaining in sieve, then add reserved cranberries to syrup. Cool to room temperature. Transfer to a
pitcher and chill until cold, about 2 hours.
Add remaining ingredients to syrup, stirring gently to combine. Serve drinks over ice in 8- to 10-ounce glasses.

Hurricane
The Hurricane became popular at Pat O'Briens bar in 1940's New Orleans, apparently debuted at the 1939 World's
Fair and was named after the hurricane lamp-shaped glasses the first drinks were served in. It's said that
O'Brien created the heavily rummed drink as a means to get rid of the large stock of rum his Southern distributors
forced him to buy.

Red Devil
I invented this drink by mistake one evening when intending to make cosmopolitans (see below), I grabbed a bottle of
cinnamon schnapps instead of triple sec. I had already poured when I realized my mistake. It turned out to be quite
good! This is essentially a cosmopolitan with cinnamon schnapps in place of triple sec and garnished with a maraschino
cherry instead of a lemon slice. It's really red and suitable for perhaps Halloween or Valentine's Day, as well as
general occasions when feeling devilish.
For two:
- 2.5 ounces vodka
- 0.5 ounce cinnamon schnapps
- 2 ounces cranberry juice
- maraschino cherry
In a shaker with ice add the liquid ingredients, shake and strain into martini glasses. Garnish with cherry.
For more than two, the ratio is five parts vodka, four parts cranberry juice, and one part triple sec.
